Remasters and Remakes

Post by Scandia » Mon Mar 21, 2005 6:58 am

I've read the guides.

I've FINALLY figure out how to decrypt/rip DVD footage into my computer and use Virtual Dub to export it as AVIs. Before that, I did not have the skill level or hardware to do so.

So I would like to remaster my more recent AMVs- easy, replace file, plus just a few episodes to rip and use. Can't really do so with my first 2-3 due to my not being able to afford to get MKR and Escaflowne completely on DVD.

But I'd also like to change one scene (as well as improve timing IP) in another one. This would be consider remake.

What are your experiences with remastering and remaking? Do you recommend it? Does it cause problems here at a-m-v.org due to extra space you are using and the sort?

I remade Warning once I learned that ripping clips into MPEG to *begin* with isn't the best way to edit. The result was better quality and a handful of changes to a few scenes, but nothing too significant. Plus it took just about as much time as the original (6-7 hours, keep in mind that the only things I did were cuts and speed changes)

Once Eva: Platinum is finished being released, I plan on remaking it again: same song, same theme, but I'll start from scratch and give it a full workup. It'll basically be the version I intended to make, since Warning was my first AMV and I knew nothing at the time.

Personally, I'd recommend remastering, but advise against remaking. Once you start questioning your original edits, you'll never stop working on your old vids and never get around to making new stuff.

Oh, and you wouldn't create a new listing and upload the video again. The mods will delete Local downloads if you're planning on uploading a better-quality version, so just request a deletion and you'll be fine.

We've already logged one remake -The Face Inside of Me Is... (Razor Sharp mix)- which is just a tweaked version of the original version of 'The Face Inside of Me Is...'. We made a few adjustments to some of the timing and added a few new fades to it (we decided to enter it in a con comp and still had the original project file), but it wasn't a major change. However, after some considerable deliberation and rereading of Amvorgs' rules on remakes and remasters we decided it was a remake and so needed it's own entry. This hasn't really bothered us.

Currently, we've almost finished work on a totally different sort of remake- 'Shuji and Chise- Eternal Love (Two Hearts mix)'. 'Shuji and Chise- Eternal Love' was only our second video (and to date the only thing we've done with fansubs) but it has surprisingly turned out to be our most popular AMV with 6 opinions and an average of 9. However, every time we looked at it we could only see the potential for improvement- not only was the fansub video source pretty poor (especially compared to Zarxrax's 'Love Eternal'- I swear the name's a coincidence!) but we weren't happy with our editing choices and didn't feel we'd done either the anime (SaiKano) or the song (Iris) justice. So we decided to give it a complete overhaul now that I have the DVDs with new shots, new effects (now that we can use Aftereffects), a more focussed concept, and much better editing. We're still having a lot of fun doing it and we anticipate possibly even cracking the ranks of the elite with this one.

So don't be afraid to remake your stuff if you feel you can better yourself by doing so. And don't merely remaster- feel free to upgrade to DVD footage, but unless you were 100% certain you couldn't improve the AMV at all then you should always seize the opportunity to change things while doing so.

I got a 1 once in originality once because I remastered a video, and I didn't even release the previous one because of the visual quality. He said "i don't give remasters any rating on the originality scale for obvious reasons.", then I told him "Your score in originality is like giving a video a low originality score because it's been remastered from VHS to DVD."

Well, my really really recent stuff I would just remaster.

But older stuff I'd have to remake. Some I would just change one scene. In others I would change stuff totally because I knew nothing about sync and the sort.

From what you guys tell me, remastering/remaking is actually encouraged. I'm glad I found out how to rip DVDs and make those AVIs. Hopefully my video editing software won't crash due to them.

If you can actually bear to remake a video, go for it. I know that I can't stand looking at projects once they're done, which is why I delete them a week or so after I've finished them. Besides the immense gain in disk space, it offers a good sense of finality, especially when combined with the inability to recover the data that is present in modern filesystems.

It's something along the lines of "you know, if I don't do something about this, I'll never stop tweaking it"...

I do many remakes. If I notice a flaw repeatedly or enough people mention something to me, I'll go back and fix it. That's one of the reasons why the opinion system is so useful. But I don't go so far as to make new catalogue entries, I simply point my direct links to the remake. I do reach a point where I am fully satisfied with a video, but getting there can take a number of revisions.

Personaly I think remakes are a waste of time. When you release a video it has flaws in it. Flaws which you learn from. Its beter to use that newfound experience on a new amv rather than wasting it on something thats allready their.
