There is no substitute for Counterspell or Disenchant.
I'm gonna build an all-Revised deck to console myself.

Magic...8th edition
Yea...its kinda disappointing that counterspell is gone...god damn that was a kick ass card. It was the staple of any blue control deck, just like force of will is a staple in any type 1 control deck. The whole disenchant thing wasnt all that bad, what with naturalize (1G green disenchant) and all that, and demystify and wipe clean arent too bad either, even though they still cant compare with the original...and the only one that can is green...but at least there were replacements. God damn...counterspell, say what you want, but nothing compares with the speed and efficiency of counterspell, with the only thing comming close being Force of Will, but then again thats a rare. Yeah all of my magic playing friends (with the exception of Omni) and I knew a long time ago that they were taking counterspell out of 8th....it seems like they're taking a staple out of each color these days. It first started with Dark Ritual for black, then Lightning bolt for red, and now Counterspell, Llanowar elves, and Disenchant for blue, green, and white respectively. God damn....nowadays, the only type two tourneys my friends play in besides friday night magic are Drafts. Sheesh this is depressing. I kind of miss the old days, back in the begining of Ice Age when things were so much simpler....

Apprentice
Maybe we should all start some kind of MTG thing with the apprentice program (found @http://www.e-league.com/, patch with oracle patch, which has all the magic cards ever printed) its free ware, although you are limited to 1 v 1 games and there arent really any graphics, but what do you expect for a 1mg d/l freeware...Alucard_FoN wrote:They're neutering my favorite color by taking out counterspell, those bastards. Oh well, I never play anymore anyway. It's not lack of interest so much as it is lack of money to keep up with new sets and lack of opponents to play with.

New Cards
Im not sure about the # of Type I tournies, but there are plenty of new cards that can compete with the older, "power 9's." For example: "Minds Desire" from the most recent "Scourge" expansion:Castor Troy wrote:Isn't it true that there are barely any Type 1 tournaments anymore? since the new cards can't compete with the old.
Mind's Desire
4UU, sorcery: Shuffle your library. Then remove the top card of your library from the game. Until end of turn, you may play it as though it were in your hand without paying its mana cost. (If it has X in its mana cost, X is 0.)
(Storm) (U=blue by the way)
Storm = copy this spell once for every spell played this turn
Basically, in Type I games, first turn: Mox 3 times, and one black lotus or better yet, play 6 moxes, all before playing mind's desire. If you play mind's desire after playing multiple moxes and black lotuses, each mox and each black lotus you play COUNTS AS A SPELL SUCESSFULLY CAST. Therefore, you can copy this spell 4-6 TIMES OVER ON THE FIRST TURN. This is the reason that it was RESTRICTED IN TPYE I GAMES MONTHS BEFORE IT EVEN WAS PRINTED. This is not to say that the numbers of "broken" and "overpowered" cards haven't decreased since Urza Block. There are, however sufficiently powerful cards in the most recent blocks to compete and even give some of the older cards a run for their money.

Well, although Disenchant is gone, Naturalize is in and it's functionally identical. And in some ways, for some decks, Mana Leak is as good as or better than Counterspell.
The decline in T1 tourneys is due to most players not having access to the kind of stuff you need to play high-level T1.

Went to sealed Deck tournament Friday Night and it was the fourth round my record 2-1 going into it. Well there were 8 minutes left game tied 1-1. So we agreed there would be no draw and just played as fast as we could. I missed by one turn from winning the game and I feel back 2-2 which I finished 7th out of 14. But if I won that game I would have been in 3rd. Missed by one game that really sucked. Oh well can't always finish in the top 4.

Actually, Bolt was removed before Rit, although Rit is much more broken.[AV] ChOjIn 69 wrote:It first started with Dark Ritual for black, then Lightning bolt for red
