(my first AMV) Welcome to the NHK - Crazy

Post by animemusical » Sun May 24, 2015 4:14 pm

Hi! I'm new here. I recently made my first AMV! NHK is one of my favorites and I wanted to pay tribute to it. I tried to focus more on the depression/drama theme of the anime rather than the comedy. I also purposely left the subtitles and tried to get them to somewhat correspond with the lyrics and mood of the song. Idk, it's a bit different. I haven't really done any video editing before, so any tips would be helpful. Thanks! :)

I understand your decision to leave the subtitles in your video (and I actually intentionally did that once or twice when I was starting out as well), but doing so is actually a no no. Having to read subtitles while you listen to the lyrics of the song and pay attention to the footage on screen is too much to do at one time, and so the subtitles do more harm than good. They just distract the viewer from the rest of the vid. Also, your scenes are way too long. A good way to think about the length of your scenes is to think about the cycles of a metronome or the cycles that a orchestra conductor makes with his baton. Trying to have your scenes fit within cycles and maintain a consistent pace with the song will help you achieve good flow in your videos. Hardly anyone has good flow in their first vids, and its a skill that you acquire as you edit more, but it helps to keep it in mind. You picked a really fitting song though. Welcome to the NHK was definitely a good choice for it.

But anyway, welcome to our community. Its always nice to see new people becoming interested in the hobby. I look forward to seeing you grow as an editor
