The TMNT and the KOR? (one with the cat) videos were character profiles.

Hhahahaa yes I loved the fact that someone did KOR to begin with but then it was a profile on the cat. Very cute.

Ah, the beauty of discussion: "character profile of the cat" vs "comedy" would never have occured to me. :-)

The FY video (46) and the Princess Bride video (54) both looked trailerish to me.

Wasn't saying there were no videos for the various categories but there was no abudance in lots of categories.

Could it people people stuck to the more 'traditional' categories so they didn't suffer from the 'not enough in a category therefore it won't get anything'. As an example... Did people not risk sending in trailers because if there weren't enough they would therefore get lumped into 'comedy' (usually), and generally Trailers are shorter and thus not as likely to do as well in a comedy category with longer videos providing time for more laughs...etc...

I figure most people just sent in what they felt was their best video. Did anyone not send videos due to the fear of there not being enough videos in a specific category?

Quite possible, but I dont know about the longer makes for funnier.. Seen some quite funny shorts... It may just be a lack of people doing trailers they wanted to send in.

I sent in the video I felt the strongest and most serious about this year... although some people won't see it eye to eye with me... you'll be surprised which one it is.

I think people probably sent in the video they most wanted to have participate in this contest. Honestly, I'm kind of not surprised at the apparent proliferation of more dramatic videos in Pro vs. the more upbeat/light ones. Many at a traditional contest (Otakon this last weekend very perfectly demonstrated this) tend to groan at the simple playing of the category identifier for 'Serious/Drama' and to a lesser extent 'Romance' while they usually cheer for Action, Upbeat/Dance, and Comedy. It would make sense that at least some people would assume Drama videos would get a more serious (no pun intended) consideration in Pro than a more fan-influenced event. I sent in the video I wanted to make specifically for Pro, personally.

Also, we're of course completely free to ignore the traditional categories (resisting making Jingoro puns here...) and just make up whatever we think fits best. If we have to make up 5 different subsets of Drama/Serious (Tragedy, Tension, Horror, Emo Angst, etc.) and there are enough videos people think fit in them, it's all good. If there simply aren't enough videos to fit in a category, then it's quite possible there just won't be an award in that category. Though I would think that would kind of suck for something like a trailer, where they generally only compete well against each other.
