I was not expecting my video to make it due to quality.
I still submitted it but would have remastered it if I had time.
I found out my ripper program was lowering the resolution & quality.
But by then I only had a few days left and only the version I submitted.
Well, I'll still remaster it for other competitions and here on the org.

Does anyone know if the people who made it to pre-list judging get passes?
i heard that they did in the past but was not sure if the new admin's were doing it.
If they are doing that how do we know if we made it that far.
I will need to check with programing about that. As far as I know its a case of if you made it to the judging and were not DQ'd for being a troll vid (which we didn't get any of) you get one.

Again, I need to verify the policy with Programming. I also need to verify if its one per entry form or two (which I know my screw the couple of more than two member teams that submitted). as soon as I have these answers I will let you know. The head of programming is currently in hiding as her birthday was last week the day before mine actually. She escaped...I presided over AMV judging. :) She is supposed to be back tomorrow I think.

as soon as I know, you all will. :)

HMMMM lets see, another one that comes to mind as a stand out vid, I really liked Vespabee's "Some Girls Try Too Hard". I am a big Slayers fan but I also liked the little undercurrent joke with the girls who were trying too hard.
*big starry eyes* OwO

And you've just made my day- er, night!

If anything, I wanted to give Slayers some love since it's coming back to TV after 11 years (premiering the day before the con, no less). If the possibility of a pre-show comes true, I'd be estatic to see either one of my videos up on screen.

A couple more stand outs,

"Feel Alive" by L Pereira. I really enjoyed this one. What did him in from making the finalists was the audio quality. The video was incredible. It totally fit in to AMTVPro. It was fun. I was particularly impressed with how deftly he walked the line with almost but not quite crossing the nudity limits. it was most amusing. Unfortunately the Audio was well above redlining and by the time I got it it was too late to re-submit with better audio.

Which brings me to a minor rant I will probably mention at the AMV panel if Nic lets me.

I have noticed alot of editors don't pay attention to their audio. I literally had one entrant tell me when I asked him to resub for audio as he was one of the early entries and he had time or if he wanted to go as it was, he said something akin to "Oh well I thought you were just going to normalize it all anyway and that would bring it down." Blink blink huh?

Ok, I realize not everyone has a degree in television production such as myself. I realize not everyone has taken sound engineering classes.(I strongly recommend you do if you have the chance you will be amazed at what you learn), but I saw many videos that redlined ALOT. The above mentioned video is one of them. Normalization may bring audio levels down but it won't remove distortion that is already present. In Premiere/Final Cut, Vegas or whatever you are using for your editing, if your Audio meters/indicators hit red its BAD. Once you hit red you introduce distortion and clipping. Normalization of audio is a compression technique. If you have a wide dynamic range in your audio, normalization can potentially fuck that up and make your audio muddy.

It was really obvious in one or two cases who knew what they were doing with audio, there were a couple of entries that when I was checking them in premiere I was watching the meters and they rode the line perfectly. Digital Paradox's "Freedom" in the action category is one example. I was heavily impressed with the quality of the audio in that one.

"But Panther, this is a Video contest. Editing is the focus!" I hear some people say. Well how can I appreciate the video editing if the audio is so crappy or distorted that it is distracting or painfull? And its a Music video contest. Music is audio.

Ok rant over. I apologize I just had to get that out there. There is alot more that I could rant for hours. but I am sure in most cases I am preaching to the choir. [jumps off soap box]

Seriously though, if you can take an audio for video course at your local Community College, do! You will be amazed how you will find that information useful in other areas of your life as well.

Edit: yes I know the rules say that we will be normalizing audio. It will be on a case by case basis and I will be trying to do it by volume adjustments not compression.

A brand new 4th series ('Slayers REVOLUTION'). Same characters, seiyuu cast, studio/crew/director, and continuing where the story left off. No joke.

Latest up-to-date news: http://homepage3.nifty.com/QPHOUSE/s-again.html

Heck, a sneak peak of the OP song came out the other day: http://www.alafista.com/2008/05/25/slay ... k-preview/

After hearing the news I got inspired to make the videos below. :)

Awesome!!! I wonder if this is gonna be the one where Naga finally comes into the series. When her Seiyuu was a GOH at con she hinted that there was a new series in the works that would include Naga. That would be soo cool! Now it is you who have made my night. :)

Hehe, there IS talk going around that Naga will appear but until it happens, it's just rumors for now. I'd love to see her appear too, but moreso than a cameo like in Slayers Premium.

Happy to make your night! Love that there's Slayers fans still kicking. :D

I also want to add that it's not about how beautiful your edits are, how clever your effects were, or how awesome your concept was. It's all about one deceptively simple thing.

Was your video enjoyable?

The beauty of your edits, cleverness of your effects, and awesomeness of concept are all what contributes to that. They do not take the place of that.

Of course, that also means that s/he can't upload it here.

I guess that next time, if you mention the whole normalization thing in the rules again, you might want to mention for the benefit of those who aren't familiar with the term that it can't fix digital clipping.

Though I know there are programs out there that can fix clipping if it's not too bad (Adobe Audition comes to mind; I don't know if it had this functionality when it was still Syntrillium Cool Edit Pro).

Yeah the normalization aspect of the rules was a holdover from last years version of the rules. We didn't make a great many changes to the rules this time around. We (my self and my co-director) have already noted several things we need to adjust for next year as well as building an F.A.Q. with explanations and hints and we planned on including things such as a less ranty version of the audio thing above and including the 48K vs 44.1K audio comparison. If we keep the normalization thing it will include a better (if brief) explanation of what it is.
