Next season will see Pokemon take over the record for longest running anime, I think.

However, if you can think of longest running meaning anime that has been around the longest and is still having new things made, it would probably be Lupin which still has movies being made.

There's an anime called Sazae-san that's been running since 1969 I believe. There's well over 1000 episodes of it. That's pretty damn long.

Don't know about longest running movie series though. Or do you mean what single movie is the longest running?

There's hardly 13 Pokemon movies. I think there's 5, maybe 6 at most...

oh yeah... I'm being terribly thick tonight.... pokemon is wining in the *west*

Sazae-san is stupidly long, but I didnt realise it was older than Lupin (even if only by a few years)

Yeah, well I forgot about Lupin for movies. Hell, there's at least 15, maybe 20 Lupin movies.

The first Lupin series started in 1971, but didn't last for very long. There were two more series later but it's not running anymore. I think altogether, they broke 200 episodes, but I'm pretty sure Pokemon has surpassed that. Detective Conan beats both of them, but Conan started airing a year before Pokemon, so of course it has more eps. I'm not even sure if Pokemon is still airing in Japan.

I'd think the longest is either Sazae-san or Doraemon (which is still on Japanese TV and has annual movies)...

And Yay for Lupin and Conan, the latter needs to get licensed, dammit. I'm sick of only being able to half-understand the manga without needing to keep a dictionary handy (I read it in German, not my native language).

It's definitely Doraemon. Sazae-san 2nd place. I think Doraemon has something like 1800 eps... something like that. It's insane.

Yep, Doraemon, that was the first Anime I watched and owned, back in like 1986 or something like that and it was on season 5 or something then. Ever since then a Doraemon movie has come out every year without fail as well. It's insane but then Doraemon was lovable, although when you get older you grow out of it. It was kind of like my anime version of Sesame Street if that makes any sense. :) Yuu Yuu Hakusho and Slam Dunk are also series that have over 100 episodes. Ranma 1/2 was pretty long running too, and since the same person behind Inu Yasha was behind Ranma 1/2 it's probably safe to say that Inu Yasha will be at least as long as Ranma 1/2 was. :)
