Astro boy WAS the very FIRST anime (tetsuwan atom) in 1963, he came to america as astro boy cause his name when translated means atom boy or something and that name was being used already.

That is correct as far as my knowledge goes (which certainly in this case is uncertain). I had been informed that Astro Boy was the first animated title in Japan.

There was one production predating Astroboy in 1962 (but it wasn't a TV series, so Astroyboy is the first series, as I already said). I have a bookmark to prove this on another comp, but it is a comp which is currently kaputt (I'm trying to fix it but I have other more pressing matters).

Tetsuwan Atomu translates to "The Mighty Atom".

Oh yeah and since anime is the french word for animation I don't astroboy would qualify as the first.

i think astroboy or gigantor is the oldest. Lupin the 3rd if from the late 1960's

Well, the word Anime is borrowed from the word Animation, but, I think the original question was refering to Japanese Animation, which is what the word "Anime" is generally associated with.

And well, Astro Boy is indeed one of the very first works of Japanese Animation, though it's not by a long shot one of the first Animated works.
