@_@ Just at what resolutions do you peeps run your screens at?
I'm more or less used to 1280x1024@32bits by now on a 17''. I try to allways get wallpapers at the highest resolutions available, then downsize if needed. Windows uses up LESS resources if you use center instead of "stretch" for wallpapers.
The best way to use wallpapers without virtually hugging CPU cycles or memory is to put them in bitmap format (they'll load faster and they'll eat up exactly the same RAM that a jpeg uses when uncompressed for viewing as wallpaper anyways) and resize them using a program like PSP7 or whatever so your CPU doesnt keep wasting cycles resizing the wallpaper everytime your desktop is refreshed.
I dunno... Might give a performance boost out there to all of those that have their Windows pumped full of eye candy.

I setup a remote comp on my parent's room that runs 1024x768 in a 19''. It's brand new monitor... And so I mess around with it and 1024x768 is definately the optimum resolution for watching movies or anime in THAT type of screen.
At like 60-75hz refresh rates I can still get video overlays on the old Riva TNT2 video board, however video looks kind of jagged (and shity) compared to my 17'' so I was like "WTF"? Then I experimented pushed the refresh rate to the max (125hz/can't use overlay) and the picture is so damn smooth that it's as if the entire desktop was an overlay all the time. Even the most shitiest Divx encode looked CLEANER in full screen compared to 60hz with overlays or 1280x1024@60hz. It's terrible for DVD playback though... But that might be related more to the video board.
Most NEW monitors should be able to get higher refresh rates (actually, mine is an old 17incher that can't go over 60hz) so I'd recomend anyone to look up the specs or install the "info" files from their monitor that either came in a CD or floppy disk. The difference between running at normal 60hz VS 125hz is unreal. @_@
/me needs to get a new monitor... ;_;

Weasl owns. click the "News" link on that page for the main.
The 1280 wall looks great centered on a 1600x1200 screen with the BG set to black.
