Favorite aspect of an anime

Post by Cornwiggle » Sat Feb 24, 2007 2:24 pm

What is your biggest draw to a series?

The animation? Characters? Plot? Animation? Music?

What will the anime have in it that draws you into it? Your biggest hook.

I really like series with great characters, characters that have great chemistry around each other even though they could all be completely opposite. A lot of my top 10 animes have this aspect, I tend to like a group of people having an adventure or something. The shonen anime formula basically. I tend to really get into an anime when I care about the characters and their antics alone or together are easily some of my favorite parts of it.

What about yours?

All the above. I like series like Aria and Manabi Straight, which have no real story, but interesting characters, I like series like Gankutsuou which has a big involving plot (and characters), I like series like Dead Leaves, Gankutsuou and I'm Gonna be an Angel, which all have uique art styles. I guess music is a minor thing, because all it really changes is if I watch the opening/closing every time, a few times, or not at all.

I've never actually seen a series with a good story but not good characters though.

The later series of Pokemon is the first one that comes to mind, where like the entire cast is almost replaced. Though the story later isn't really that great EITHER, but the characters are worse.

Good plot and characters draw me to an anime like flies to crap. If an anime doesn't have a good plot, I pretty much abandon it. I will make exceptions, however, when the characters make up for the lack of intrest in plot, Excel Saga for example, though there is hints of a plot between the gags. A serious turn off is too MUCH plot, such as Pokemon, the dragon ball series, and most notably, Inuyasha. If they can't let the series eventually die, the writers and artists deserve to be shot and have their heads buried out in the desert under strict guard of warrior-monk hounds.

My favorite part of an anime? It would have to be the world that the show portrays. Many of my favorite anime I chose because I love how the world works and how amazing everything meshes together. Just because I'm intrigued by a world does not necessarily mean I would want to live in that world, though (*cough*HigurashinoNakuKoroni*cough*)

Some examples:

Last Exile - I really loved the European Victorian era feel to it, as I like history in general. Plus most of the show took place in the sky aboard airships, which gives a fantastic feel to an otherwise nostalgic world.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - For being deceptively like our own world, only where fantastic things can happen despite our unbelief. Kyon's monologue at the beginning of episode 2 pretty much sums up my thoughts on it.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - My interest in this largely stems from having read game spoilers and knowing the entire plot (which was barely touched upon in the actual anime). Once reading all that, I was able to see the world portrayed in Higurashi in a totally different light. This show really makes you doubt your own perceptions of reality.

Mushishi - It's quite fantastic, like living in a Miyazaki film, lol. The quiet, calm, laid-back nature of the show also helps set the scene.

Azumanga Daioh - You have to admit, life would probably be a lot more interesting if you actually attended that school of theirs.

hmmm.... depends on the anime. Though one of the few reasons why I decided to watch Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was because the music was AWESOME. I also found myself watching anime with good opening/ending themes (such as Code Geass until OP2 messed it up. But Code Geass still rocks and I'm still watching it of course).

Another aspect of anime would simply be the "Oh ****!" moments, such as the brilliance and cleverness of Death Note, and a lot of the wierd moments in Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni.

but in general, I would just watch any anime as long as it's good and if it's nothing like Pokemon or something.
