I agree with you on a lot of the stuff, except:
You keep talking about story and characters and plot and whatnot, but to portray these things you need context. ie if you haven't actually seen the anime which is being used you don't know who the fuck who is or what the hell the story is. This severs any emotional connection (emotonal connection to drawings ) immediatley. So to keep your entire audience satisfied (and not just the anime nerds) you need to make more of the video then just a portrayal of stuff that happend in a serie/movie. You have to create your own little "world" in which a clear story can be portrayed within the duration of the video without any previous knowledge of the situation. This is where some of the effects videos (a minority) actually beat "classical AMV's", they create a short little understandable "story"which stands on it's own.

The philosophy of the cut? This isn't zen buddhism, it's just an editing program.
You got it right about the life experience shit though. I hate most romances for the simple fact that someone who's total romantic experience is feeling up the class slut isn't going to come close to capturing what a real relationship is like. A middle class suburbanite teenager doesn't know what drama really is much less be able to convey drama. The group of people that thinks emo is actually emotional doesn't know fuck about sentiment. Someone who's favorite TV show is Aqua Teen Hunger Force probably couldn't identify what depth or story is much less make something with a deep story. I like a good T&A video as well as the next man but by and large when the org tries going beyond that I feel like Bill Clinton is lecturing me on marital fidelity or something. I keep having to fight the urge to stand up and scream 'WTF, you don't know shit about this'.
Then I remember that 75% of my profile are stupid comedies, the next video I announce will be a MEP that's entirely 'concept' videos like Koop was bitching about, and that I'm known on the org primarily for being an insulting jackass. A bit of perspective kicks in and I go to my corner and shut up.

I agree with almost all of your points. You can't really pin point where the shit went wrong though, but the ppl who make videos "prettier" are the ones who are making it hard for any good videos to be made anymore. The reason that happens is because the people who do it well have usually been editing for a long while and this is their next step in expression, like you said. The problem is that these people are the most popular editors and the people that new editors are most influenced by. So you get new people releasing things that are trying to do the same things that the "pretty" videos do. Creativity is being extinct in AMVs and it comes from the shitty Anime out now as well as those new people not being able to be Novel because they rather have internet fame or because they just don't know how to.

Im playin with just straight cuts now , was inspired after my silent hill vid to try and not rely on use of such fx. I have a couple betas here
http://209.67.218.50/Kham/
that use no fx at all other than speed changes, and i think the cuts i made make up for the lack of fx in certain areas.
From an amv standpoint, i really dont have much room to offer anything cause i dont know what its like to tie characters to any story. All i know is balls out action n shit. but the concept of what looks good should still be the same, this argument is actually two arguments fx vs cuts and structure vs random
i take the latter in both

first off, anime targets anyone. There are kids.

Second, it's not that people are hating anime or hate on amvs.
It's just about now people keep reading the same post about "What makes a good video"? I hear all sorts of answers from the concepts and the effects. U see 1 person saying about concepts, mood, and ect. While the other Person is saying about the effects and originality. Then the 3rd person comes in says u need one of this of what the 1st person said and what the 2nd person said.
Before you know it your confused, ur doubting your ability.
and Finally, the effects.
I used to be against them til I grew more neutral about concepts myself. If your video even so has a theme on what it focuses on it's satisfying enough. Just as long someone knew what they just watched is more satisfying.
It's simply called change, but not exactly something thats taking over.
AMV was created without a definition than what we just saw on the very first amv, Why can't anyone live with that?

yeah, and lots of us have hit the point of doing it for so long that its less about the anime and more about the editing.. and i do have to agree with beo that effects videos arent really amvs.. their effects videos using anime.. just like khams videos, their effects videos using live action. but then again amvs are just us trying to be creative with what we have.. and some express them thru effects and some do it thru putting anime to music.godix wrote:The philosophy of the cut? anime has targeted its audience, i agree. The line has been drawn, its either child anime or hentai.. there are some good animes out now.. but their few and far between.
and as for your mads quote.. thank you.. i've been saying this for years.. its all just flashy and ridiculous... too many effects and no story... some try to add a story, but they usually fail.
epic post/rant tho

I do agree with alot of the points made in the rant, but is it really fair to compare amvs to cinema? I know there's alot of good story based and emotionally engaging amvs out there, but regardless, amvs and movies are 2 separate things. Comparing amvs to the Godfather is a bit far fetched.
The rant on japanese culture was gold though.
