Naruto is OVERRATED, not underrated.

Tsukikage Ran, Carried by the Wind.

A hilarious comedy anime with great fight scenes. Given a dynamic story arc (beyond 'Ran gradually gets to dislike Meow less') to break it out of the formulaic, a full 26 eisodes, and more effort in the art department, this would be a classic. As it is, hardly anyone seems to have heard of it.

Rune Soldier, too. Fairly funny, very cool to look at, but not too well-known.

In my opinion, their mistake was forgetting that they were a Dungeons-and-Dragons-based advenure in addition to being a comedy. I kept waiting for them to go out and cruise dungeons and fight monsters, but they pretty much hung around in town going to festivals and part-time jobs and petty errands after Louie got himself accepted by the group. Even the end of the series wasn't very fantasy-hero-like. Just anime-hero-like. (though one has to admit, Louie's method of foiling the enemy were unique) In short, we needed less people and more hobgoblins.

Hmm... Truly underrated? My pick is Oniisama E or the original Yokohama Shopping Trip. I could probably come up with some other anime I really like, but proving the point, how many of you would have even heard of them?

Green Legend Ran

Oldy, but goody. Why was it overlooked? Hell if I know.

Casshern (or Casshan: Robot Hunter). The anime, not the live-action movie.

I really love the story in this, it's fabulous and before its time - but the show is held back by the lead character's amazingly silly costume (looks like it should be in power rangers) and that of his love interest (how does that thing even stay UP? It defies the laws of gravity.)
