Either way, if we do end up at LA I'm considering the following options
1. Something near the general hotel areas (since the nearest hotel is half a mile from the convention center there should be food nearby, when it gets closer I can drive up there and check it out since it's only about a 30-40 drive for me to get to LA).
2. Trying to snag a decent area in one of hte hotels and we order a crapload of pizza
I'll figure a way around it somehow, I'd hate tos ee the creator dinner die since I started running it so many years ago.
Actually, Downtown L.A. (particularly the area around the convention center) has improved dramatically in the last few years, ever since the Staples Center opened. Businesses in the area have re-invented themselves for the upscale sports crowd. More importantly, the booming housing market in Los Angeles made some developers purchase dilapidated properties in the neighborhood and either refurbish them or demolish them and build new properties. Expensive lofts are popping up. I actually have a client who lives in the area (those of you who know me are aware that my day job is "IT guy to the rich and famous"), and his loft is awesome! I don't think he would have moved into the area if he thought he wouldn't be safe.
In addition to the new stuff, there is also a ton of history. About two blocks from the convention center is one of the oldest restaurants in L.A., the Original Pantry (although IMHO, the menu selection leaves a bit to be desired). There is even a neighborhood nearby called South Park. Yes, South Park. Imagine the photo ops!!!!
However, I will be the first to admit that the selection of hotels in Downtown L.A. is very paltry. "Official Con Hotels" at E3 included the hotels at Universal, some 20 miles away (!!!). Suffice to say, the hotel situation is going to be terrible, and AX is probably going to have to front a ton of money to provide shuttles to hotels (similar to San Diego Comic Con).
But the best thing about having AX at the LACC is that I can easily get to it by public transportation. I take an express bus to the subway, and some 30 minutes later, I'm there. Then again, I'm used to taking public transportation.
I will make this offer to other AMV creators out there. Having worked in Downtown L.A. for 9 years, I'm pretty familiar with the area, so I will be happy to show people around to restaurants and other points of interest in the neighborhood. Perhaps that might take some of the "Downtown L.A." sting out of it. I may originally be from Northern California, but L.A. is my adopted city, and I've managed to make my San-Diego-based fiancee actually feel proud of where we live.
