Newbie
Since I have run a contest where we had an award for best 'Amatuer' or another term would be 'newbie' AMV creator, I felt I would give some information.
In the rules is stated list your AMV expertise: Novice, Intermediate or Advanced. In general a Novice is someone who has been making AMVs for less then a year and/or won no awards. If you are not a Novice do not put down that you are.
Okay so that was the rules we used. Basically it comes down to that I believe people know if they are Novices or not. I used the other part about time and awards to help people. If you've been working on AMVs for more then a year I would think and hope you have the basics down.
The award part is two sided. One it keeps those people who have a nack for AMV creating who have won awards in their first year from saying they are a newbie just because they have made AMVs for less then a year.
The other side is those people who have won no awards but making AMVs for more then a year. These people maybe don't enter contests because they are not 'confident' in their skills (another mark of a newer creator), or their videos just don't hold up to what is out there.
I still think it's something you know. I don't know when I stopped being a Newbie, but I know I'm in the middle of the Intermediate skill level.

i think you stop being a newbie when:
1.you have decided your preffered software and techniques
2.you have made a couple of experimental amvs just for the hell of it
and you are actually planning your amvs
3.you dont go around the forums saying : "im a newbie, what do i do?!!?"
4.you have seen a wide variety of amvs not just lbz or dance etc.

When he/she stops asking Stupid Fucking Questions. For examples of said Stupid Fucking Questions, see above. Forgive my bluntness, but all this thread is doing is adding to that Stupid Fucking Argument/Stupid Fucking Thesis of Spamda's that lasted for 16 friggin pages of thread, and pissed off alot of people.Stryker wrote:What is it that makes a person now longer a newbie? Well, there are people that think anyone that entered the world of AMV's after them is automaticaly a n00b, even though there may only be a difference of 2 weeks.
So in other words, one part of the community is waging war on another part of the community because they take their community seriously enough to want to do so. Then they tell the powerless side to get over the loss cause it's just an online community. I'm glad people make so much sense." -- Tab

In my book a newbie is no longer a newbie when they have met the following criteria:
1: Has at least 2 non-Kevin Caldwell videos on his/her list of favorite AMVs
2: Has seen at least two AMV competitions at a major convention.
3: Joins the AMV mailing list and doesn't get flamed within the first month.
4: Has successfully made an AMV without using DBZ or Linkin Park and submitted it to a competition (regardless of whether it showed or not).

Actually, I think it's more simple than that. After you have no life and you see premiere more than your girl friend and thus have no live do you graduate from being a newbie....Hmmmm sound like being a newbie is a good thing since after that it's like getting condemed!xstylus wrote:In my book a newbie is no longer a newbie when they have met the following criteria:

If that's the case I'm a n00b living the life of a pro. How sad is that, the only thing worse is that Spamda's a pro living the life of a n00b.

Outta the 30 or so people that have answered, I think you're the first to point out that part of my post. That part of my post was more like thinking out loud, everyone else seems to have overlooked that part and just gave me some legitimate thoughts on how they see the subect. (with the expection of the few that really don't care) That was the only part of the post that I wanted people to reply to. All I wanted was a intelligent conversation on this matter. And as for the 16 page thread that you refer to... I doubt that I'm picking away at the social structure of this community. I'm not trying to call anyone anything and I'm not trying to insult anyone. Besides, if someone doesn't ask, then how will it ever get answered. When he/she stops asking Stupid Fucking Questions. For examples of said Stupid Fucking Questions, see above. It's all in the eye of the beholder...nahhh, it's all in the eyes of the creator.

Re: Newbie
I really don't agree with you here. I've entered 4 contests and didn't win a thing, I'm entering 2 more I probably won't win. Is this because I am a newbie? No, it's because the general public does not like my video ... AMV creators might like it but general anime fans watch videos because of the "cool song matched to the cool anime" not minding gimmicks and tricks pulled (thus not minding if the song isn't something you like). "AMV contests are not always judged by technical merrits but are more like popularity contests". Not winning an award doesn't make you a newbie in my eyes. If you've managed to put together a decent video and you stop asking all the questions new people tend to ask then you've stopped being a newbie in my eyes. heck the video doesn't even have to be great, you could make a piece of crap, aslong as you know how to do it and what you're doing then you're no longer newbie in my eyes.anneke wrote: The award part is two sided.
