Just like when I write, I only really do so for myself. I make what I want to make. I do it how I would like to see it. I put the kind of story that I want into it.
When people tell me what they think about the video I pretty much always think 'cool.'
I find it interesting to see what different people have to say about my videos purely because I like to see different interpretations.
Other then that, meh, could give a damn.

Call me crazy, but I think a lot of us are self-centered bastards like that. There may or may not be a coherent story or point to our work. That said, most of us don't edit with the audience in mind unless we're trying to do comedy.
Actually, some of us just try to amuse ourselves with comedy. Anyway.
I know that I don't generally stop and think about how easy it will be for a viewer to understand what I'm making. At the same time, there's an important distinction. There are videos that are hard to understand, requiring a little thought, and then are videos that are just fucking incoherent. Maybe there's nothing there, or the editor just couldn't pull it off, or maybe they rely on some symbolic scheme that doesn't make sense to anyone but them.

I could care less about whether people like my videos or not. So no I don't think about how my audience will react when making a video. I think such an approach works for people who are experimenting in the business, but not when it comes to crafting a defined art.
However I do think about what I want my audience to feel during the vid, despite whether they like it overall or not. Just as long as the vid fulfills its goals and needs, will I start to worry about the interpretations afterwards.
Most editors I've noticed will usually break down their methods to either:
1) Being shaped by their audience.
or
2) Being the one shaping their audience.
Experimenters follow the 1st. Artists follow the 2nd.

Ok so here's a summary:
In art, you can build your work towards pleasing yourself and your own sense of art; or build it towards being pleasing to the audience and their sense of art (although note that these are not necessarily opposing directions). In AMVs, like in all fan-created art, you are not expressly producing the work in order to secure financial gain to support yourself and thus there is no direct need to put something together that pleases your audience. Instead there is a desire to do so for those rewards of recognition, respect and fanboyship that can hence emerge. Some choose to do this and others choose not to, although more realistically it's a spectrum. Someone 100% making videos for themselves does not have them on the .Org; they may well not know it is there. Someone building videos 100% for others cannot actually be a person any longer, to have given up that much of their own ability to direct their actions.
Aside: as a result, I have not made an AMV as I have not yet found one which I could make yet which would please me in what I want.

Actually, I DO think about my audience when I'm making a hentai video. This is purely in a way that I can judge if I'm getting the correct feeling out of the audience that I'm looking for. If I want the video to be revolting, then I try to do so in such a way that the maximum number of viewers will find it revolting.
I still to this day get a little smirk on my face when someone new tells me they just saw Singing 'parts' for the first time and how it ruined their view of Yoshi Story, or their childhood ^^
Maniac was perhaps the only hentai vid I've done so far that doesn't follow that equation. Though I'm still not sure if anyone would really get all the underlying meanings and such to each scene and their placements and the pace or really get the overlying story... but that could also be due to the fact that it is pr0n, and most pr0n viewers don't bother to really think all that deeply when watching it.
