have audio but no video

Okay, I know practically nothing about computers, and I am desperate to be able to watch amvs, and other videos, however, i just got a new comp, and it has vista, and when I try to play the files, I have audio but no video, if anyone can take pity on me and at least point me in the right direction i would be very grateful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
