Animes with Sacrifice and protective warriors

I really enjoyed Final Fantasy X (the playstation game) and Fushigi Yuugi (the anime). Both had a similar theme.

Spoiler :

A girl has make a journey with protective warriors at her side and at the end she must sacrifice her life.

I want to find animes with a theme similar to that, even if it's a little different. Sailor Moon has some elements of this especially in the first arc against Beryl but it's not exactly the same theme as the other two I mentioned.

Any suggestions?

Kannazuki No Miko came to mind as a perfect example of this. It's shoujo-ai though, in case that's not your thing.

It'll also make you cry like a baby at the end. ;_;

I don't know about the shoujo-ai, does that mean there is lesbianism in it? I wouldn't seek out an anime for that but if it has a good story I can watch it in context of the story like I can watch Sailor Uranus and Neptune without it bothering me.

The only thing that would turn me off to an anime completely is if it had graphic sex scenes or something like that in it. I'm not interested in hentai series.

I'll check out both of those titles.

Also if anyone else has any other suggestions I'd appreciate it too. I really love anime.

Da Capo, most other animes based on magic and myth (Shuffle), Cowboy Bebop, Trigun (<--- the sacrifice in the last two is more like 'this person died so we're gonna kick ass in his memory' rather than what you want really, but thought I'd mention)

Most Shoujo (I'm not sure what constitutes Shoujo-ai in this day and age lol) like EF: Tale of memories has life/ death (virtually...) decisions and there are others at the tip of my tongue lol...

I liked Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. They don't necessarily fit this theme but they were good suggestions because they are anime that I like.

I was wondering where this particular theme came from. Is there a story in Japanese myth that follows the pattern laid out in FFX and Fushigi Yuugi?

well FY is totally Japanese (or Chinese w/e...) mythology. But yeah it's just Buddhist theory (the main religion in Japan) to give up your body for the prosperity of others so I'd suppose so *shrug* Idunno.

Also I'm no expert in the area I just stayed in a Holiday Inn last night.

I'd recommend Fullmetal Alchemist. It's all about sacrifice and two very protective brothers.
