Song subs?

Post by Vampirekun » Thu Dec 16, 2010 10:35 am

I'm doing an AMV to a japanese song with a really good text for the anime, but since everyone doesn't understand Japanese I wonder how appreciated it is to put subs to the song? since anime subs isn't very appreciated...But without song subs people won't know the song fits? :(

I never use subs.

Just go with the rhythm or feeling of the song. I have DBZ action videos set to Japanese love songs :P

Make a subtitle file to go along with it. Then people can use them or not as they please.

Soft Subs = good. Hard Subs = bad.

I made them using Aegisub for my "Dysfunctional Christmas" by request on AMV News, then Kyle_M changed them into russian.

In general, people don't watch videos for the damned lyrics. I'd say don't include subs unless you're doing heavy lyric syncing. And if you're doing heavy lyric syncing in a language you know most of your audience won't understand, what the hell is wrong with you? Just match the feeling of the music and make sure you aren't actually going against the lyrics so the few who understand them won't get unintended comedy from it.

From the number of times I've had Genkaiten on NND, I can say even if they do know the language and it makes no sense, they don't care.

There's a difference between making no sense and providing unintentional comedy. Imagine a non-english speaker making a drama to the song Let's Have a Party so we end up seeing a funeral to lyrics of 'let's have a party tonight'...

I don't suggest making sure his video makes sense with the lyrics. Just that it doesn't go so counter to the lyrics that it provides that sort of unintentional humor.

If you made the video with the lyrics in mind, then I feel that you should make multiple versions of it. The local version should be just the AMV without any subs. Another version should be a MKV with soft subs.

If you didn't bother matching the lyrics to your song, then you don't need to make a subbed version at all.

Wouldn't that be a good thing? I mean, everyone loves comedy. Let people see it how they want, and everybody's happy.

How many dumb fucks that already speak English play White Wedding un-ironically at their own wedding reception?

If people that speak English could actually understand the lyrics in the songs they listen to, "Every Breath You Take" would be considered creepy instead of romantic.

Native English speaking people can't even understand lyrics in their own language.

I had to look up the lyrics to Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal to find out what was being said. :P
