Creepy anime backgrounds

I'm looking for anime with creepy settings and backgrounds. Ominous smoke clouds, evil energy scenes, stormy skies, dark desolate cities. I'd love some rivers of blood but that's probably asking too much. Just any shows that have scenes that make you think, "Oh, yeah, now it's getting creepy."

I'm looking to darken a bright upbeat anime, and I need suitable backdrops. Anything dark, creepy, angsty or goth would be nice. Brutal and bloody hellish settings would be even better.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni or Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

...they both have the same theme of repeating days/an event but Higurashi has "psycho girl characters who are designed to look cute" and Umineko's characters have more of a mature design with a setting more in line with what you are probably looking for

That one looks especially good. Thank you very much for the recs! I haven't watch a lot of horror/dark anime, so I had no idea where to start. ^^;

"Another" is defiantly great
The ongoing anime "Tasogare Otome x Amnesia" looks very promising. There has been a lot of happy funny intro stuff but each episode has been getting more and more dark and I feel that if the couple scenes it has now aren't enough that more darker/creepier stuff is coming.
Hellsing has a lot of those types of scenes as well

I watched the preview for "Another" and would have thought it was for Hell Girl until the eye patch girl showed up. Gotta check it out.

PUELLA MADOKA MAGICA!!!

Why hasn't anyone said that yet?! It looks like sugar and rainbows, but them witches fux everyone over. Plus, there's like paper animation and creepy carnival-style art in it. There's a few blacked out bloody scenes in it and a lot of dying. Pretty emo shit for a shojo anime.
