Notable people in the AMV community as Convention Guests?

Post by Maxite » Fri Mar 21, 2014 1:12 pm

So I've been to quite a few conventions, and a lot of them typically have a diverse category of 'Guests of Honor" who are people who the convention invites. Typically they're talent within the industry, but there are also quite a few popular Web Comic or Artist Guests, Cosplay Guests, etc...

The thing is: I've never once seen an AMV (or related) Guest of Honor. The closest I can think of would be notable fan parodists (e.g. LittleKuriboh, Team Four Star, etc...).

Is there anyone in the AMV community (or related communities) that people would consider notable enough to see them invited as a Guest of Honor to a convention? What qualities should an AMV Guest of Honor have?

I'm sorry if this sounds like harsh in any way, but I think it's down to the fact that conventions are nearly always able to attract guests that are higher profile than an AMV editor. I imagine they try to make their "Guest of Honour" someone fairly notable, and the fact is AMV editors really out that notable. You don't get people discussing AMV editors outside of the AMV community very often, and when they are talked about it's usually in regard to the history of AMVs or the particular video they created. I might be wrong, but outside of the occasional "Hey, check out this wacky Our Tapes thing. It combines Hyouka and K-on, isn't that rad!?" I've never seen AMV editors even mentioned outside of the AMV community.

I think you pretty much nailed it, MouseBollocks. A lot of conventions are iffy about AMVs because of copyright blah blah anyway, but because contests are so popular by demand they kinda just roll their eyes and say fine  . We of the AMV community gotta stick together cuz we're the only ones that make it happen. :jester:

It's happened a few times over the years but only at relatively small cons... Frankly, AMVs are a niche that doesn't speak to the broader audience as a whole (like voice actors).

I was actually asked to be a guest at Toracon back in like 2007 or thereabouts. It was a no-expenses paid, get there yourself, we'll give you a free badge sort of thing, and I didn't have a way to get there, so I declined (and was kinda freaked out they'd ask ME when they could have invited someone with talent instead).

Koopiskeva was flown to Prague to be a Guest of Honor at some little hole in the wall convention once XD

But yeah, I'll just echo what everyone else said because editors typically aren't a big deal. Sure, you'll get a fan every once in a while or sign an autograph but for the most part there really isn't a major demand for it :P

Phade is a Guest of Honor at Anime Detour every year (going to guess the OP has no clue as to who he is :P ).

@JudgeHolden: I've never been to AnimeDetour (though I have heard of it). I wasn't aware that Phade (who is a-m-v.org staff) was a regular Guest there.

So the general consensus seems to be that AMV Guests won't be swarmed by eager fans like a typical industry guest would be.

Though it does sound like AMV Guests would make for a good "fan guest" or "niche guest" that some conventions have a few of each year. People who would host a few panels related to the subject, maybe do some guest judging for contests, and other shenanigans.
