@Vivifix - I understand what you are saying. I agree if you put a lot of effort in your video you want it to be shown everywhere it can. So on the same note you have other editors out there that put a lot of work into their amv's and don't make the cut because "your" video is at every con they enter. That's why I created Battle of the Greats for Nekocon. So Award Winning AMV's no matter what the age is of them can be entered into the contest and have the best vs. the best. Then we still have our regular contest for AMV's that have won 2 or less awards. Now the issue is there is still a lot of great AMV's out there that have not won an award and will still make the cut despite make 10-20 finals or whatever the case is.
However if more conventions did this Battle of the Great style contest as a secondary AMV contest it would help to start filter the regular contest and allow more AMV's to be shown in Main Events.

AB actually did this in 2003 and 2004. IIRC It got quite a bit of backlash from the editing community (of which I wasn't really yet a part of, so the details might be fuzzy) for (at least theoretically)...VivifxAMV wrote:I was really pleased this year that Anime California had entrants put their AMV level on the forms (Novice, Journeyman or Master) decided on how many awards you have won. Then they gave awards to the best novice video editor, best journeyman and best master. This imo is a great way to create a fair playing field for newer editors, so that they can compete in an environment that is more skewed to their level.
A) being almost a condescending "gold star" type award for the novices.
B) taking up finalists slots with worse videos that weren't competing on the same level as everyone else
C) being horrendously difficult (i.e. nearly impossible) to police.

Re: Anti-Trolling rule needs to take affect more?
I think people are blowing things a bit out of proportion... a 6 max award limit will effect how many videos? Just a handful if you ask me... I am leaning towards a 6 month freshness rule and 6 award limit as well as having a category with the top videos from the past 12 months no award limit. The award for the best of the best I would want to make sure is on par quality to Best in Show.
I think there is a balance that can be found where the editors and fans both will be happy.

What if they haven't won an award, because they actually aren't that great....Gene Starwind 21122 wrote:@Vivifix - I understand what you are saying. As I have stated, the more complex the rules, the more work and for the Coordinator and the more confusion for those who enter... The last thing we really need is making the rules at all the AMV contests even more convoluted and complicated. I honestly just prefer the freshness rule as trying to police amount of awards is kind of getting to be too much work and real easy to miss with so many contests and is it really necessary? Buy hey, that's just my opinion too.
Oh, and creating a contest just for video that won more may not always be possible for all cons based on time and work loads (also amount of time they give you in programming) so that may not be the solution for everyone. Creating a category is nice too, but ultimately it may end up taking time away from the primary contest if you plan on having finalists shown during the contest and again most cons are only given so much Main event room time.
Lastly, in all honesty, the amount of awards a video wins at contests never bothered me as there is really no consensus is seems. It's when creators start to brag how good their video really is based on the number of awards they win that potentially I personally have a problem with. Now not saying people do that as most are pretty humble about it, but in the past there were instances of that.
One question I do have that may of kind of been debated, but are we adding rules like this in for the Audiences sake or the Creator's Sake, contest fairness, or just to satisfy our pet peeves or a little of both or all? Just wondering

Vlad the thing is if a coordinator wants to try it why not... it is their choice and it isn't going to hurt anything to see how it goes.Vlad G Pohnert wrote:As I have stated, the more complex the rules, the more work and for the Coordinator and the more confusion for those who enter... I don't disagree... I just know there are people who burn themselves out or have to take a lot more flank for missing stuff by doing too much (so technically it could hurt someoneMaboroshiStudio wrote:

Re: Anti-Trolling rule needs to take affect more?
It's both. I've heard complaints from the audience man I've seen this video at every con I've gone to the past 3 or 4 months. Then I hear complaints from the editors. Also I'm trying to think about the fairness to the other editors that want to get their work out there. Granted some of the videos submit to the contest are not "contest finals worthy". However there are times when you're like man this video has been at several conventions, isn't time for the editor to move on and make something new.
Granted like Vivifx said if you spent a lot of time on it you do want to show it off as much as possible on the biggest stages.
So it is really a messy situation when you think about it.
Time + effort = more screen time.
I don't know. All the points mentioned here are good ones.

I suppose regional variance can skew your perceptions, but as a percentage of audiences, people that even attend multiple cons in a year are far from normal.Gene Starwind 21122 wrote:I've heard complaints from the audience man I've seen this video at every con I've gone to the past 3 or 4 months.
