The noobs
I just got to thinking as I'm casually sitting out by the pool as I type this, do you think there's a 'barrier to entry' for Amv making that have never touched a editing software in their lives? I feel like other videos that are vastly better might be discouraging for them making their first one. Of course, when I started out that had the opposite effect on me. I always saw things and I'm like 'I can do better than that' etc. I dunno. I just feel bad for the people that end up making one 'my first amv' and that's it. Thoughts?

Re: The noobs
Who cares, if people enjoy it enough they'll keep making amvs even if they won't get much attention or love or whatev.
There's quite a few first AMVs I enjoy. I doubt you need to be super technically adept in order to make a decent first amv.

Re: The noobs
it's not because of the amvs, it's the current editors that discourage them, look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GYVj9D-rVkSephirothskr wrote:might be discouraging for them making their first one.

That was pretty funny. Haha.. I know 99% of my friends hates my stuff and it takes 'no skill' hope no one else has to deal with that because it gets discouraging.

is dis kim from the skype chat that died with enigmo??? and basically, he was casually sitting by the pool and whilst looking at his reflection in the water, he thought: "do we amv editors come off as untouchable gods to outsiders??????? does this scare them from entering the cage with us????"Kimberly wrote:Um, what.

Re: The noobs
Elitism and competitiveness among editors can be a huge turnoff for some newcomers. I was incredibly intimidated by the community when I first came around the Org and I struggled with trying to make new videos, especially to anime. After a while I finally made friends here and a lot of tension I had was lifted and I was able to create a little more freely.

It can be the same anywhere on the internet, it's just how people are. From forum signature making to online gaming.macchinainterna wrote:Elitism and competitiveness among editors can be a huge turnoff for some newcomers.

Re: The noobs
I'm still not sure I've ever identified this "elitism" thing here that people have been spouting off about for the last decade or so.
Is it people being boastful? Because, honestly, it comes off as really thick satire on the rare occasion we get someone new around here that does that.
Is it having and applying the same standards for "good" to everything, regardless of who made it and how experienced they might be? Personally, I see that as honesty, but I can see it being a bit disheartening.

Possible aside, but I'm not sure it doesn't hit the crux of the issue...
I see a sense of entitlement in a lot of (usually younger) folks - this sorta pervasive idea that you can walk into a community and expect to be immediately accepted and welcomed without having contributed anything of your own or that you immediately should start with some recognition or right to leniency or outright praise for trying. Now, there's nothing wrong with people who want to lavish everyone they meet with that sort of attention, that's just the way that some people are, but to come in expecting to be treated that way in any community is foolish. Respect and recognition are things you earn. Nobody has a right to be a jerk to new people for being new, but no new person should have an expectation to be treated with anything more than bland indifference. This "gold star for effort" mentality is really warping expectations.
