The Rayearth critter is Mokona.

My vote'd have to go to the Nekobus from Totoro.

I have the trigun cat sitting on top of my computer at work! As for cuteness I'm a big fan of the puchu things from excel saga.

Two of these aren't animals, but I've always liked the "Haro"s from several of the Gundam series.

Pyoro from Vandread is a fun robotic mascot-ish character too.

I think I mentioned this before, but Vamire Princess Miyu's Shiina is now one of my favorites, outplacing Mokona. It looks somewhat like a rabbit, except it has one undead eye hidden behind a flopped-over rabbit ear, and it has hedgehog-ish spikes instead of a cotton tail.

And Pete the 100,000 yen kitten from Zone of Enders, Dolores i while not seeming to have a big role seems to get involved in just about every single episode, hiding inside family member's shirts and going swirly-eyed while in the middle of a battle. Getting to ride in Dolores all by himself, and when he finds Noel, he has a cute pink ribbon attached to his tail.

The Excel Saga aliens are called Puchuus.

Cactuars are cute (although not anime). Many of the cats in Azumanga Daioh are cute, too.
