I tried to lip-synch on my first video using Windows Movie Maker. Where there weren't even any stand-out portions in the song that could justify lip-synch. The result was a few segments of lip-flap that did not really look like lip-synch at all.

I did a short lip-synch in my fourth AMV, and I feel like it really matches. It certainly works a lot better than the first AMV. But very few people have seen it. And either because it's sort of part of my end buffer and not really part of the song, it's rather pixelly, or because they thought that it was an unedited vocal segment didn't give me a score for it. :/

im doing my 1st vid now .. playing with primier and WMM to get the feel .. i am using both d\l songs and yes .. anime as well (fansubbs! yay!), im saving my dvd sets for when i do get the hang of it and can be quite sure i can handle ripping and editing.

all in all .. these 1st 2 vids will be pure and tottal crap .. yay me.
...the problem I see a lot is that many good amv makers think they suck, and many bad amv makers think they're good.
I've seen it happen, man! I've SEEN IT!..

Spending 5 months of my life on my first video (which was DBZ) and actually getting pissed that I didn't win a contest with it -_-

Well, I technically wouldn't call this stupid piece my first AMV...it was more like just playing with downloaded Eva footage and a Wierd Al song to get a feel for how Premiere worked. And yes, it turned out awful. No transitions, crappy pixelled footage, HORRID lipsynch (don't ask me why I bothered), really bad MP3 sound encoding, and an enormous file size.

For my first real serious AMV, the three major mistakes I made were 1) ripping the FF7 videos in Cinepak (worst .avi codec ever written) and REOMPRESSING them with the same damn codec for the "final" cut, 2) layering fullscreen scenes over the ending sequence footage without clipping it, and thus magnifying the black bar distraction (if you've seen the end of FF7, you know what I mean), and 3) no compression whatsoever of the audio. When I look at the original version, I laugh at myself it's so bad.

To me, there isn't much wrong with using uber-high-quality DivX source, especially if you don't have the hard drive space to support all HuffyUV source clips (I'm only going to have about 15GB on the new laptop I'm getting, so I'll have to use either DivX or MPEG-1 source clips). The only problem I ran into with that is that Premiere HATES the combo of DivX source and pre-made transitions. But I easily solved that problem on my second AMV by using the rubberbands for fades (which look cooler anyway).

I used the default MPEG export settings for my first 6 or 7 videos, thought it was the best I could get, and trashed the source files. So the shitty MPEGs are the only "master" copies I have. See Ugly Girl, Anime Passion, Youth Gone Wild, etc. for examples.

I used to also cut the songs into 10-second segments and edit them in separate project files, then export them individually and put all the bits together...which is why you can hear audio blips in some of the old videos. I was an idiot.
I have no idea how to use this new forum.

Capturing in 15 fps, exporting in cinepak, and using Xing mpeg encoder.

2 years later... I decide to remake the video in 29.97 fps, exporting in huffy, and using tmpeg.

The scenes were harder to match up because of the more fluid motion.

Extend the video track, you'll see a red line on the clip. Those are opacity rubberbands. Use them to adjust the visibility of the clip.
