I need that predator gatling gun.

When Michael Moore won the Oscar, people stood in ovation for him.

When he gave his speech, there were many people cheering and many people booing

When he went to the press area afterwords, there were no boos. He was applauded for his actions

Michael Moore was not on stage alone. He told all the other documentary nominees that he would speak out against the war and against Bush and they agreed to stand at his side in solidarity.

The view that all people in Hollywood are liberals is an absurd and typical brain-dead statement. I mean, sure, if you just like to bah out thoughts you have heard from other sheep rather than actually know things... then you don't deserve an ounce of respect.

Lastly... a lot of you don't even know what it means to be a liberal. Might I point out that a lot of conservative groups have attempted on several occasions to ban anime. There were conservative religious groups that were angry at Disney for releasing Kiki's Delivery Service because it was about a witch. There are conservative groups that are unhappy about anime because of its violent and sexual content and have gone after certain tv stations who have allowed such material to be shown on public TV. Back in the late 80's I helped get signatures so that Sailor Moon could once again be broadcast on a local station that stopped showing it because of conservative groups who opposed the show. I have never actually watched Sailor Moon, but I knew that it was important to do my best to fight against a lot of frightened, close-minded, conservative folk who in their actions had denied many fans of one of the few sources of anime (back then anime was much harder to find)

Liberal - (according to Webster's) - not narrow in opinion or judgement - tolerant.

as opposed to

Conservative - (again, going to Webster's) - disposed to maintain existing views, conditions or institutions, one who adheres to traditional methodsor views. Cautious.

Now... think about this. The very fact that you have opened your mind to anime means that you have taken a liberal approach to what you will consider for entertainment. Instead of taking the traditional view in America which is that "animation is just kid-stuff"... you have broken from the conservative view... which would be *gasp* the liberal view.

Oh... and remember... even if 51% of a group of people think one way while 49% think another... the 51% is still the majority.

Moving on... I read that "Critique of Mr. Moore's Documentary" and found it laughable. I don't even think it is worth the dignity of discussion, but I can tear many of the points made by the author with great delight.

I am very proud that Michael Moore won the Oscar for his film and
I am glad he had the courage to speak his mind on stage
and I think those who did boo (amongst the many who applauded) can do so easily when hidden in a sea of audience.

If you can see it, I would urge that you check out the press interview with Michael Moore backstage at the Oscars.

Even better, then.

I'd be all for that if it meant I got a free Sig assault rifle and could do most of the work on it :P .

UncleMilo - If you can refute that link's points, then please do so. Otherwise, don't mention it.

Hell, you already made a long post congratulating Michael Moore and lambasting liberal/conservative definitions, what's another one gonna hurt?
I'm out...

These are nice proper dictionary terms for words that mean something totally different politically.

How can liberals call themselves "tolerant" when they attack sacred institutions all the time. liberals all the time want to go back to old ways of doing things that have never worked. Whos says conservatives can't be open minded. Sorry Politically those defintions mean something way different.

government (n): Latin (suckus my ballsus) 1) Don't be hatin. 2) Old people arguing about dumb shit. 3) Anything political.

politics (n): Latin (poli - many/ tics - ticks) Multiple blood sucking parasites.

political (adj): Having to do with or containing many blood sucking critters.

I hope this clears everything up.

I know you are a well informed person, and for the most part, respect your opinion (when you don't insult anyone at the same time). I found that write up on Bowling for Columbine very interesting, and it's not the only source that notes Michael Moore's works as being semi-documentary in nature. This has helped me form an opinion of Michael Moore as a director, and as a person. If you would point out the inequity's, though, of what was written, that will help me refine it even more, and change some of my ideas. I actually would appreciate it if you pointed out where David Hardy lied in that essay(?) of his.

The dictionary definition of Liberal and Conservative are quite different from the real world. According to the dictionary definition, people who support abortion and affirmative action are Conservatives.

Since it seems that Moore is refering to the Presidential election and Gore getting more votes than Bush (in total)
50,996,062 Votes for Gore
105,594,024 Total votes
= 48.29% of Voters who Voter for Gore

So while Gore did get .5% more votes than Bush, the Majority of Americans did not vote for him.

Akatoro Please at least add something to the conversation, don't just be an ass. This isn't only you, other people do it to, and I let them know my displeasure with it when I see it. (though on some, it is a lost cause)

Arguing politics on the internet is often not far in maturity and rapport from arguing politics in the school cafeteria in junior high; not many people know what they're talking about, and those who do make valid points are personally attacked and insulted in an attempt to discredit their reputation.

Come to think of it, most politics are like that.

Regardless, I respect Michael Moore, not only for what he did at the Oscars, but for his work in general.

I do not agree with Mr. Moore on everything, but I think it's important that he shows an alternative view on things. People in the United States are bombarded on a daily basis with conservative propaganda, so it's good to see some propaganda from the left.

People are by nature skeptical of all things political in our society; we don't trust any political opinion unless we are blindly zealous towards a particular politician (and be it JFK or GWB, it's dangerous to be so, either way) - therefore, most people will take the opinions of both sides, and guess that the truth is somewhere in the middle. However, the political axis in the U.S. is so tragically skewed towards the right, that even recent popular "liberal" leaders have been slightly right-biased, or middle-of-the-road at best. Clinton is a good example; do something left-based, then pass five right-oriented bills.

Anyway, it's true that America is a capitalist nation, and when I say that we should hear more from the left, I don't mean that we should become a marxist state. I despise communism as much as I despise capitalism. What I mean is that Michael Moore is brilliant because, although some my label him as a "radical", he is present a view that is much farther left than most popular quasi-political figures, and in doing so, even if people think he's a radical, or even if they think he's insane, it makes clear the fact that there is an alternative vantage point to the current popular politics of this nation.

Hence, although I may not always agree with Mr. Moore, I respect him for trying his best to keep the balance.

But, that's just my opinion.
