Is HuffYUV 1.3.1 better than 2.1.1?

Just curious. How can a lossless codec be improved?

It can be improved by removing bugs and by making it faster and more stable.
"If someone feels the need to 'express' himself or herself with a huge graphical 'singature' that has nothing to do with anything, that person should reevaluate his or her reasons for needing said form of expression, possibly with the help of a licensed mental health practitioner."

oh, ok. so there will be no difference in what the encoded video looks like, its just more compatible and such?

No, there can also be visual differences. For example, HuffYUV's author might decide to improve the output of the RGB -> YUV converter.

A version jump can mean anything -- read the software changelogs if you want to know what was changed.

I believe he made such exstensive changes to it that the files are not compatible with each other. So there was probably some deep internal changes.

Your best bet is to go with the latest. He probably has those old version up just in case someone needs to decode a file encoded with them.

i uninstalled the old one and installed the new one... all my old clips work fine, and so do the new ones. so i think that they are still compatible...

Backward compatibility is not the same as forward compatibility. In other words, HuffYUV 1.3.1 files may open in HuffYUV 2.1.1, but that means nothing going the other way.
