if all you need is the audio then just follow my audio guide.

It tells you how to record any audio that you can hear in windows - you set it up, play the mov file and TADA! trailer wav.

erm, again, i'm not THAT dense. If I could have done it with Vdub or premier or tmpeg, I would have done so already, unfortunately, you're guide doesn't cover ANYTHING on mov files... and vdub, at least the version I have, doesn't like them.

Yeah, it helps if you read :P

"Getting Audio from Video Files

This can either be really easy or slightly tricky depending on what your source file is.

Hence, the guide will have the following sections.

1) Getting audio from AVI and mpeg1 video files using Virtualdub
2) Using mpeg2 audio from mpeg2 video files using dvd2avi.
3) Getting audio from locked video codecs such as RealMovie"

Number 3 is the method that applies to you, as you guessed ^_^

FYI: Using QT Pro is out. The QT files of the LOTR trailers are locked so you can't resave or export the original file. So no .mov to .avi that way.

One more method:
There is a MOV plug-in at Doom9.net under MPEG 1-2 encoders. Just open it and export AVI.

Bleh, that's what I said to look for - a DirectShow filter. :)
VirtualDub doesn't have any of its transcoder filters "built in" -- it interfaces with the DirectX API. (As it should.)

Anyway: If you do use that kind of setup, be careful about what kind of codec your Quicktime file uses. I have to emphasize: Quicktime is not a closed format. For evidence, I point you to:

http://www.heroinewarrior.com/quicktime.php3

At the same time, Quicktime can be used with proprietary codecs, such as Sorenson. Quicktime files encoded with such systems will not be opened by anything else other than Apple's proprietary software. (Sorenson V1 was recently open-sourced, but who the heck uses that anymore?) If, on the other hand, your Quicktime file is uncompressed or compressed using an "open" method, you'll be fine.

Of course, if all you want is the audio, all this is moot. Go read AD's guide. :) If, however, you ever want to use Quicktime for anything else (for example, what it was designed for), consider this a PSA. :)

as a referance

VirtualDub does not use DirectX or DirectShow

it uses Video for Windows

it can not read anythign unless there is a VfW driver for the codec...

the next version of VDub will suport Directshow...

but 1.4.10 (latest version) is not even close to suporting DirectShow
Lead me not to temptation, for I have deadlines

? There are a few codecs that VirtualDub can read on this system that I don't remember installing VfW drivers for. Unless those came with the installation package, and I didn't see them.
