Question...
>Personally, I think a better question would be, What have Otakus come up with that wasnt retarded?
Well that's an interesting question. I think that being an Otaku has actually brought about some good things for various people. For myself, I learned how to use a sewing machine. A skill I would have never picked up if I hadn't wanted a cosplay costume so bad. I now can use that skill in other things.
AMVs are another thing. Poeple have gotten other jobs due to the practice AMVs have given them in editing.
Art is another field. People have to start somewhere, and if they start by drawing Anime characters then so be it. I have seen some wonderful art in the artest alley and artshow. Even original stuff that wasn't based off of other people's works. In Japan they have Doujinshi artists which are just fans who start drawing comics on their favorite series, and some of those 'fan artists' have gone on to be full professional Manga-kas.
So that's three things good that have come out of Otaku-ness.
As to the person who started this thread...
As for the sterotype of what an anime fan is, well it's a 'sterotype' meaning it doesn't apply to everyone. If you actually go to an anime convention you'll find most of the cosplayers are not overweight cross dressing males, etc.. Yes you have some, and thus is where the 'negative' sterotype comes from. But guess what, complaining about those people is not going to stop the sterotype.
Basically you have a problem with A. People who fall into that sterotype, or B. the sterotype that is be given to Otakus. Which is it?
If it's A. Guess what, your not going to stop people from doing what they like.
As for B. Because you can't stop people from doing what they like (if that means being an overweight cross dresser so be it), the only way to end the 'negative' sterotype is show that it is not a negative sterotype. You show me an over weight crossdressing Male at an anime convention, and I'll show you a person who is having a lot of fun.
Guess what, not everyone has a size 6 body. That shouldn't stop them from cosplaying or doing what they want to do. If you think that's true, why don't we kill all the jews while were at it?

Listen, douche bag, I wasn't telling you to STFU, I was interpreting what you said as you saying that to Serpico. The only difference between my post and your post, as far as I can see, is you took a lot more writing to say the same thing, whereas I just got straight to the point.emp|typ|athetic wrote:Alucard_FoN wrote:Your point is, we're all nerds here in one way or another, so STFU. I believe.
faggot
There are so many things wrong with this idiocy I don't even know where to begin, but here goes: First thing, you've never met anneke, and yet you say that she is probably extremly pathetic. Bad form, to judge someone before you know anything about them. I know some other groups like that... nazi's, KKK, etc.Serpico wrote:Why do you refer to yourself in the third-person?? WACKO!
I don't care if its your hobby or not, there are people out there (you're probably one of them) that are extremely pathetic, their hobby goes too far and it degrades them, then when people think of Anime, they quickly get the image of ->
1. Pokemon
2. some fat balding bastard in a tight sailormoon outfit.
3. etc...
-_-
Second thing: You are singling out one particular hobby and calling it pathetic. YOu say nothing about people who play video games obsessivly, people who play sports all the time, or anything else for that matter. I don't know what your hobbies are, but how does enjoying them not make you pathetic? My point is, everyone has hobbies. If someone's hobby happens to be anime, tough shit, that's their choice, stop acting like you're better than them just because you have a different one.
Third thing: The whole otaku thing isn't what causes people to have an image of pokemon when they think of anime. The vast majority of non anime fans I've talked to think anime is 1 of 2 things: anime or porn. It has nothing to do with them knowing anime fans, it has to do with the fact that all they've ever seen is little kid shows on TV and/or hentai.
In closing, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that this jackass is nothing but one big, hungry troll, so let's stop feeding him, guys.

Mein fuhrer! he says "Ve have a big Problem" SERPICO ask what is wrong "The Otaku's have begun to revolt, Herr fuhrer! Vat do we do? SHoot to kill all who oppose the will of Serpico"s Nazi Regime! the other Nazi replies"Heil Serpico,"and leavesMr Pilkington wrote:Me?Serpico wrote:- ugly peopleare you insinuating something?Serpico wrote:- ugly/fat people who cosplay cute/thin charactersHey! No, its just that otakus give anime a bad name.
Like I said, people like to generalize and when they think of Anime they get the image of the people I described earlier.
It would be fun to go into one of those 'anime clubs' at my university, but I can't cause of all the loser-retards that are in it..there are a few exceptions but hanging around them is something I'd never do. Thats what pisses me off...most of the girls I see that like anime are FUGLY, and that pisses me off...anime attracts the social rejects.
And any type of obsessive behavior over something will result in negative effects...so theres no arguing the fact that Otakus are fucktards. Simple concept.

Basically, what I'm reading here, is that Serpico either has a series of fundamental problems with certain aspects of otakuism, or he's trying to start a flame war.
However, to the fundamental problems.
I. Denying that anime can or should be liked to any extent beyond casual hobby status.
II. Being disgusted with people of disproportionate body types and age categories who like anime too much and cosplay
III. Denying that anime characters can be worshipped and viewed in a sexual context.
Again, trying to get my points across
I. We live in a liberal democratic society. If you like it, you like it. Personally, I'm not into anime too much right now, it's too time-consuming for my lifestyle to get obsessed over. At one point, I was really into it. I'd like to return to that time, but I can't.
What are you saying here? People shouldn't like anime too much? Where do you draw the line? An average American spends over 35 hours a week watching TV. Is that considered obsessive?
I envy people who have even half that much time for anime.
Don't like it, don't have time for it, don't watch it. Like it, have time for it, watch it. Think about it as much as you can afford. Write fanfics, draw pictures to your heart's content. It's up to you.
That's called a liberal society. I thought you lived in one.
II. Aesthetical values and likes/dislikes are subjective. I'm not gonna argue with the fact thatfat cosplayers are a bit ugly though.
On the other hand, you know why these people do it? Because they can. And you can't tell them they can't.
I talked to some people like this. They're really normal, not-too-badly off people. With a twist, true. Their reasoning is not as impaired as one might think. They just think it's fun and have no problem looking a little weird. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing some of that stuff, but I wish I had their determination and shamelessness.
By the way, we didn't say you can't dislike them. As long as you don't claim that to be anything beyond your subjective value judgement. I for one find some body piercings and tatoos just as weird as fat cosplayers. And I mean cosplayers are at least amusing. But that's my opinion, and I won't force it on anyone or start flame wars over it.
III. People worship rocks.
People worship crosses.
People worship pictures.
People worship an old, potentially fictional guys from millenia ago.
Anime characters are at least contemporary.
*******
In other words,
Serpico - generalisations galore, aggressive pushing of subjective values, lack of respect for others and their opinions.
Now, Ko Oh Yoku is at least concrete and more reasonable, providing examples. Although, my point there would be that those examples aren't neccesarily applicable to everyone.
-not being Japanese doesn't prevent one from liking Japan
-to someone trapped in the basement of American culture, Japan could seem like heaven. Which it's not. But the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
-But, better to like a culture that I find more reasonable and appealing than one I find dislikeable and self-destructive.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…
