A-Kon Complaint List

Post by rurouni_trelane » Mon Jun 02, 2003 3:47 pm

Ok, I keep hearing the same thing over and over again, and frankly, I agree:
A-kon ruled! Except for the AMV stuff, that was completely shitty.
Now, through my connections, I have the ear of Meri Hazelwood, the con's organizer and director. If you would all list your complaints here, I can make sure she hears about them and we can do something to get it fixed for next year. Meri has friends who make AMVs, so I don't think she blew us off intentionally. But organizing a con is a huge thing, and it's easy for simple things to get overlooked. We bring these things to her attention, and I'm sure they'll be taken care of.

It almost attracted some of the good people away from JACON.

1. Akon needs staff members that actually reply to emails for once.

2. Too damn hot in the hotel due to a busted Air cond.

3. Give the guest speakers on the amv panel a chance to speak for once. I barely said anything on the panel because I didn't want to be rude and interrupt but wouldn't it be convenient for your vocal chords to take a rest and let some other people talk for a change?

4. Microphones, microphones, microphones. None of the panels had a microphone and espcially an amv room that large was in desperate need of it. If I had to talk in that big AMV room, there would be no way the people in the back would hear me even if I screamed my loudest.

5. Speaker Control: The amv contest started off way too damn loud especially for anyone sitting in the front.

Things I did like...

1. Easy to find everything

2. Water EVERYWHERE

3. Decently priced food

4. Not too many lines for anything

5. No bootleg stuff

6. Nice non-industrial additude

meh, i thought food was pricey. Me and my friends got entire pizzas for 5 bucks driving out of the airport.

Realy NOTHING impressed me about A-Kon. I only had fun thanks to a hotel full of alcohal. Tho Game stop will never run a videog ames room like the ones before them tho, i must say the video game room this year was far better than last years.

Ditto! Also, mix in some digital submissions. Hell, just make it all MPEG-1 if you have to. Anything to keep people from submitting VHS which then gets transfered to another VHS, hence making the vids look terrible. It would also be nice if the AMV Advanced Panel was not scheduled to run when the AMV Awards ceremony was being done. The same thing happened last year, worst scheduling ever! :x

Wow, so they make you submit tape (knew that) and then transfer (EP) to another? That's like 2 levels of compression (analog) added on to your already compressed file. And those two levels (VHS) are probably the worst possible. I'm glad I didn't submit...

Funny how I've been bugging them about the submissions and overall contest for about a year and still haven't received a single e-mail back.

If you don't want your contest to explode in entries, don't take digital submissions if you don't already. Quu implied in his LJ that both Otakon and Fanime got more submissions than ACen, which means that Otakon's submissions are on the rise again, probably because of the ease of uploading....

just a bit of semi-logic for y'all.

Akon already had 6 hours of submissions. It can't explode much more than that (at least, I hope not, for the reviewers' sakes).
Besides, the higher quality would be worth it.

I bet I could make A-Kon's submissions explode far more than 6 hours

Acen was "only" 9 hours of entries.... and A-Kon is a larger and older con that Acen (I think)

at least its not AWa's which had 300+ entries last year

Help us Obi-Quu, you're our only hope. Akon is in shambles, and you are the last sane courdinator in the galaxy!
