Anime Evolution Convention Overview
Just got back from Anime Evolution Today. It was a very tiring experience for me, but well worth the effort. Not only did I do the AMV Contest, but did a complete AMV track in a huge room for the entire weekend! Anime Evolution has been a “festival” type of gathering with viewing rooms only for the past several years. This year it became a Full size con with over 6 English voice actors (A lot of anime Voice recording is done in Vancouver so many live there). About 1400 people can, which is quite good for a first time convention!
After a 12 hour drive with all the equipment required, I got into Vancouver Thursday night. ON Friday Morning, having a truck, I became the Convention’s equipment hauler. Once we got everything down to the convention site, I went to look over the room I had for the Anime Music Video Track I was to doo all weekend long. WOW, the room was HUGE and had a seating capacity of 500! It was basically a huge science lecture room and the projector image size was over 12 feet high!! This was probably the best room I’ve seen for running Music Videos in.
a shot of the setup I had there
The only down side was that the room’s build in sound system was a bit old, and so I had to work hard to maintain the high demands AMVs put on sound systems. I did bring an additional amplifier and smaller speakers that did help quite a bit. Otherwise, it was an AWSOME Setup.
Friday night I showed AMVs and spotlighted various creators and showed the DDR2 project. The room had about 50-80 people in it and was the best attended video room! (there were 7 other regular video rooms).
On Saturday, throughout the day there were about 80-150 people in the AMV video room! This was an respectable amount considering all the activities happening and the total in attendance! I also noted that about 50% of the audience was made up of females! There was a group of about 6 that literally lived in the AMV room!
At 3:30 pm, a line started to form for the AMV contest. Now, originally the contest was to be in the image theatre that holds about the same capacity (500), but On Friday, the video link from the ground to the projector stopped working and hence the contest would not be possible there! BUT, the room I was in was actually bigger in size since the seats were spread apart and had the same seating capacity and screen size, so Saturday morning the decision was made to have the contest in there as well. About 250-300 people came. Considering the huge schedule and the total, this was quite good. I got a picture of the lineup and the fans waving to all the creators who entered and couldn’t make it!
Saturday night I also Showed “This is Otakudom” Scott had sent me to an audience of about 250! They loved is well!
On Sunday during the feedback panel, people commented how much they loved the contest and AMV room! All the other staff loved it as well and definitely want it back next year! This con will grow (The Vancouver area has over 2 million population) and so will the popularity of music video there! Most of the fans I found are not familiar with who a lot of creators are and so this is a great opportunity to profile AMV videos and related events to the audience! I plan to expand this next year and make it bigger and better in an effort to highlight and show all the awesome AMVs that many of us creater. I also hope to get more creators to come to this event!

Since the two conventions are almost exactly 6 months apart, it's actually just more options for otaku! The more conventions the more fun!TaranT wrote:Sounds like Sakura-Con has got some competition .
For those who don't know the area, Sakura-Con and Anime Evolution are about 4 hours apart (driving time). In fact, I think some of the Sakura-Con staff live up across the border.
Hey Vlad, how was voting for the AMV contest done this year?

Best in the catagories, technical, artistic were done by a panel of judges prior tp the event, they also picked thier best overall. At the event, the audiance got to pick via ballot thier best overall. Bascially I feel it's improtant for the audiance to have a vote, but no to pick the majority of the winners since I feel audiances are not the best at pciking best Drama, Comedy, artistic or technical.. That's just my opinion, but I think the combined sytem I used worked out very well...CArnesen wrote:Since the two conventions are almost exactly 6 months apart, it's actually just more options for otaku! It was a very enjoyable past few days there. I am glad you had a really awesome setup and archive Vlad. I will be happy to work with you again next year and also at the panel. I hope everyone can submit a video there and try getting a nice award. We would love to have even more creators pop on up so everyone in Vancouver can get to know who our creators of the AMV world really are:) Your words would definitely influence many people to make more. Hope to see you around soon again at AX as well.
