First year in college

Post by angelx03 » Tue Aug 12, 2003 7:24 am

At the end of August, I'll be moving to RIT and start my college experience. So how's your first college experience?

Whatever you do, DO NOT TRUST THE CHRISTIANS! Those bastards will mess with your head, and use you to build up their own self-esteem. If they give you any shit, beat the crap out of them.

First two weeks = total headfuck. No idea what's going on. Sitting in hallways, reading manga, trying to figure out where everything is and why it takes a 10-minute walk to get from one class to next.

First month or so = horrible academic slump. Don't understand how to organize yourself, don't understand what the instructors want from you in assignments, don't understand where the hell you went wrong.

Next coupla months = ok, getting used to it. Getting fun towards the end

First exams = a little nervous, but tolerable results

Second semester = r0x0r. Good classes, finally know what's what and where, really not bad at all.

Just get used to the environment (really different from high school) and you're good.

I've been going to college for almost two years now. So far its been really fun. It is completely different from Highschool. The one thing I enjoy most about the difference is the lack of morons walking around. I would usually ignore the stupid people (not stupid as in intellegence but the ones who walked around doing stupid things). College is a good place to enjoy yourself as well as learn.

It was, uh...yeah. What I learned was:

1. If there's an elective you want to take, take it. This is one of the perks of college over high school: flexibility. They aren't all great, but you can try a few new things. I took a class in what was basically oratory in my senior year. Making speeches and doing dramatic readings. Had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with my major. Much, much fun. This also applies to extracurricular crap too; I was in a play once and sucked at it, but it was fun to try out too.

2. Don't expect to associate with the same people that you talk to in orientation or whatever. I've heard this happens often, but I didn't get to know either of my groups of friends/acquaintances (the dorm group, and the classmate group) till sophomore year. The people I hung out with in freshman year turned out to be wankers, for the most part. Also, don't expect to become bestest friends with any of your roommates automatically. Probably the smoothest-running roommate situation that I had was with the one I had the least in common with. We just set up ground rules and left each other alone. Worked out pretty well.

3. Find out what else is going on in the area, because you can go nuts staying on campus all the time. Unless it's a particularly interesting campus. Mine wasn't.

4. Don't spend too much money. :P really.

Heh, I don't remember much of my first year. I know I spent a lot of time in my room with my cd player and my books - pulled a 3.984 first semester, a 3.975 second semester. In the evenings I hung out with my roommates (we had appartments - 3 in ours, and I had the single room). I was put with girls I'd have hated in high school, complete opposites from me, but we got along nicely. It was a shock. I think we spent most evenings getting drunk or hanging out with their guy friends. I was in classes with all guys (engineering), so I payed a lot of attention to studying and tutoring right off the bat. It wasn't until my *second* year that I moved in with some idjits and stopped worrying so much about grades and nightly fun - I just went with however much it took to pass with an A or high B, and let the rest take care of itself. My first year I was a model student (so long as no one came by the apartment at night ^_~) - second year was the lazy one. ^_^;;

It blowed ass.

...run.

The second year so far seems to be ok. But that might do with the fact that I changed colleges.
