I was a bit disappointed when I saw that, at first. Then I noticed that it says that donating just skips the 2-week waiting period. I'll be out of that by the time I can afford to send any money, but I still will anyway. I can only imagine how much stress is constantly bearing down on the servers.trythil wrote:You're paying to support the server and the connection that hosts all those videos, not the videos themselves.ruroni_kenshin711 wrote:that blows. i dont wanna have to pay for some a.m.vs! fuck that. thats gay, why do i have to pay to watch some a.m.vs?
Sheesh. If you don't like it, wait a couple of weeks.

You know, it's ironic. When I first donated it was so I could upload my videos. At the time, the carrot was still being put into effect according to join date, so only those who donated could have instant access - the others had to wait until it got to them. And now, the waiting is only for downloads. Anyone who joins can upload freely. You'd think payment would be required from those who want to take up the server's space, rather than those who merely want access to the videos that are up. If I'd joined later, I could have forgone donating altogether, and still have uploaded as many vids as I wanted. Ironic.Sinkua wrote:I was a bit disappointed when I saw that, at first. But I still push for those mandatory donations, at least for the ones uploading vids. To download, well, two weeks isn't a long wait. And you can donate if you don't want to wait, so the donation really is voluntary. I think those who have videos they want to share should donate - and their donations would help pay for the bandwidth used when they share the vids (hence, the people putting vids up pay so others can download them). Then, it isn't so much as if downloaders are being pushed to pay for the privilege of downloading amvs. They can still donate if they want to, and they should if they can afford to. But having the donation factor more into downloading priveleges than uploading seems a little backwards.

Im not going to start a flame war with someone over the fact that phade gives a free service and all he asks in return is donations. You need to learn to control your mouth and speak in a mature way, or no one is going to listen to you.ruroni_kenshin711 wrote:you, IT, need to learn to SHUT your mouth.

I think the two week waiting period should still apply for uploading vids. That way if they aren't really serious about amv's then they probably won't come back at the end of the two week period.Arigatomyna wrote: You know, it's ironic. Mandatory donations is a problem because it starts to make the org more of a money making enterprise (I know it isn't) and can lead more easily towards law suits. Making money off other peoples work (anime or music). A mondatory donation isn't really a donation.
Plus I think I read somewhere that phade is aiming for a catalogue listing all the amvs ever made. Which is why he won't delete vid enteries. If he wants this place to be like a huge library of amvs then he can't really charge entry or charge for entering a vid.
although I do think donations are a good idea... I think we should all plug them more

I like the library comparison. We can't sell our vids, so we pay to have them published privately (like books). And as a free non-profit enterprise, we don't charge for downloading, you check them out for free. But that's just it...people pay for hosting, they purchase space and bandwidth. You don't pay to get vids.Warpwind wrote:Plus I think I read somewhere that phade is aiming for a catalogue listing all the amvs ever made. Which is why he won't delete vid enteries. Anyway, I don't have a real problem with the way the site is set up. People donate because they want to, not to purchase the right to get vids (which would go against the non-profit hobby theory). It just gets sticky when donating, paying, lets you get vids early. Those people who donate to get vids instead of waiting are paying money to get those vids. You don't pay to check out a library book (most libraries give the first card free). But someone does have to pay for the shelves to house the books, the scan system to process which books are taken out and to catelogue those books. Donations help keep the library running - they don't buy rights to check out those books.
Now I'm just drilling this into the ground. The two week waiting period is more than fair - *if* it applies to all new members. When you only focus on people who want to get vids, you're just charging for the vids - making them buy the amvs. If everyone (downloaders *and* uploaders) were both put through a waiting period it would just be a way of encouraging new members to help support the site. Instead, it encourages people to buy amvs.
And yes, I am anal about this. ^_^;; I didn't find out until recently that the waiting period only applies to people who want to watch the vids. I thought it was a donation to be a full member early, not a payment for the right to get amvs.
