I thank each and everyone of you who bothered to think before putting fingers to the keyboard. There were some definetly good sujestions which I am going to try shortly. Well honestly I showed Excel Saga to quite a few of my friends and they think its hilarious (and so do I) but its kind of hard to understand for people who do not know anime at all. However I am still unsure as what to show my mother, cause its likely that the first one she sees will create an overall impression of what anime is (so I do not want it to ba a comedy).Oh well I guess I will read over the thread again....
Thanks again people!

if yoru trying to get your parents into anime i wouldn't show it to them. Comedies are hard enough to understand on their own ... azumanga daioh would just be totaly detremental. If any ones parents are like mine they'll just think it's a stupid soap opera.

My mom has seen every anime I have. 142, to be exact. She's a real bible-thumping zealot and a die-hard Dragonball Z fan, so she nearly shit herself when she saw Evangelion. I think I fried her brain. She doesn't watch too much anime besides DBZ anymore.

She liked Blood: The Last Vampire for the art, not the story... I tend to agree.

8)

I think its funny that Im an adult and my mom still gives me crap about being immature for watching "those cartoons" and we have the whole "Theyre not cartoons its anime and its not for kids"

Last week my mom was over here and she sat and watched Blue Gender and was actually into it because she was asking questions and commenting on Yuji and Marlene. She has also seen one episode of Big-O. Oddly Im not getting comments about watching "cartoons" anymore.

A few years back, I tried showing my parents "Ghost in the Shell". They didn't get it, and thought I was now into super-violent, incredibly graphic movies.

I tried to show my mother a few episodes of Eva (Episode 8 and 21). She didn't get it, and thought I was into the "James Bond-style opening titles", and fanservice.

A few of my sister's friends were slightly interested in anime, so I showed them an episode or two of Eva. They didn't get it, and lost interest immediately.

I tried to explain the concept of FLCL to my mother. Again, she didn't get it.

Trying to engage my family's interest in a tv series or movie that doesn't have anything to do with their interests (the formation of the United States, pirates, physics, or any movie that deals with the debate of safety versus freedoms granted by the Constitution, which is really the only reason we own "Enemy of the State") is impossible.

I just told them they really have to see the film "Open Range", but they have refused to take any direct action. They are more than content to watch the same old DVD's over and over again every weekend, cruise the river on their boat, and generally avoid any interests my siblings and I have, unless it somehow involves them.

thats becouse your showing them complicated shows thats not a good way to get someone into anime i mean heck i didnt get flcl untill i saw it like 3 times and i still dont know if i get it or not and eva is also a pretty complicated story u got to start with something that is pretty simple like rurouni kenshin or something with a fairly easy to folow story that later winds up or maybe cowboy bebop thats pretty easy to understand well the story dose get complex but not till later in the series

Just to really piss my parents off, I would show them either Hellsing or Berserk. My parents hate any form of anime to no end. So what better than either of those two!! I should like tie them up and make them watch anime 24/7. I would laugh my @$$ off.
