Again, subjectivity.
FLCL is what you make of it. If it all looks random to you, either you didn't give it a serious enough look, or you did but the messages still flew past your head.
Having watched it over half a dozen times (the only anime to have that honor with me ), I gotta say that there's hardly anything in there that's random and doesn't refer to anything or suggest something.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I liked how it didn't take itself seriously.
In eps 1 after the 3d effects, you see the character in a trailer talking about how hard it is to pull off something like that ("You have to stand still with that look on your face till their done.")
And how in one of the later eps they talked about doing the animed manga, but how they were critized for being too cheap.

I've noticed a rash of self righteous elitism lately, and it makes me want to vomit. Trashing a show just for the sake of trashing it is reprehensible. It's almost as if someone passed out a memo saying that whatever you dislike becomes objectively bad, and either no one can like it, or they have to present a case for why the show is worthy of airtime or even the effort to type it's name. Well I personally do not feel the need to justify my like or dislike of a particular anime to anyone. There is a concept called "subjectivity", which basically means that I am free to say that I enjoy FLCL and you are free to say that you do not enjoy FLCL without either of us being even remotely wrong. You should try it sometime, it's fun and painless.

5 it is
All of them are great in fact, but 5 gets my vote for some of the most intense artwork, and, even if just for the South Park crossover, it gets my vote.
