Do sequels really suck?
Ok, I finally found a way to purchase Bible Black on DVD but I saw that there's also a sequel, how does it match up with the original? I haven't seen the first one mind you (not the entire thing, just bits and pieces. No, not those pieces.), but I've heard that it actually has an interesting story and that it's not a bad piece of hentai.
Anyone else have anything on their mind about sequels?
(And I think we all know that no matter what Manga says, Ninja Resurrection is NOT a sequel to Ninja Scroll.)

A lot of places say "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service". Theoreticly I could walk around without pants and still expect service.

Hard to answer that.
Some follow ups are great... some are awful. It really depends on who's doing the follow up and why.
One of the ones that really upsets me is El Hazard. The original El Hazard OAV is one of my top 5 all time favorite animes.
Then they released an unspeakably awful 2nd OAV and a nightmarishly bad TV series (The Wanderers). In both, the world was ignored, the characters were dumbed down to shallower, 2-D versions of themselves, the animation and artwork took a step down... and I have set a decree that anyone who brings The Wanderers into my home will have it stripped from them and forced to watch as I jump up and down on it and then later set the copy on fire. That's how much hate I have for that series.
I never bothered to see "El Hazard: The Alternative World, but from what I have heard... while it is nowhere near as bad as The Wanderers or the 2nd OAV... it still is a far cry from the original El Hazard and still pays no attention to the continuity of the world set up in that series.
On the other hand, a friend of mine has been watching the new Read or Die series and he's been telling me how great it is (and I trust his opinion...plus he told me a little about it and I really like what I'm hearing)
So... it's a gamble.
I'm always careful about any follow up to any show or movie.

There are two kinds of people in this world:
Those who divide people into two kinds of groups
and those who don't.

Cervates(author of Don Quijoto, 2nd most puplished book around the globe after the bible), when asked to write a sequel said that the sequel is never as good as the original.
I agree generaly speaking. When technology is involved you can say that the sequel may be better than the original. Also, if the original was a bit of a practice shot to see how things would turn out, then the sequel may be better.

When it comes to video games, usually the newer the better. I say usually because some classics should never be upgraded. Also, Colony Wars Vengence sucked compared to the origonal Colony Wars.
This is not to say that sequels shouldn't be made in any way at all, just that sometimes you need fresh material.

It depends on whether or not the original was created with the intention of there being a sequel. If not, the chances of the sequel being worthwhile decrease dramatically.

When talking about anime, you also have to keep in mind that sometimes the manga continues after the anime ends. Fruits Basket, from what I've heard, is one example of this, and supposedly Violinist of Hameln totally deviated from the manga.
The point? The manga artists built in the length. As long as the anime sticks with the artist's original vision, then anime sequels can be very good things...

The only thing I can think of that I have seen that has a sequel is Happy Lesson and Happy Lesson Advance. I thought Advance was as good if not beter than the original.
Also Sister Princes and Sister Princess repure. Sorry but I liked it. Story was so-so in original but I liked the characters.
And Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou 1998 OVA's I really liked and I liked the sequel, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou 2002 OVA's I thought was better.
