I hope no one takes offense at this, but for me YYH *is* very similar to aspects of dbz. The difference (again, for me) is that YYH lacks the major flaws/problems I have with dbz. Except for Kuwabara's fights, the action isn't drawn out past the point of dramatic tension (even Yusuke's fight with Sensui was mixed with enough emotional reactions from the others to keep it intense). The focus *does* shift to more minor characters in the middle of some fights, but it's almost always an important scene that's taking place at the same time (flashing to the others to show why they aren't helping Yusuke during the Maze episodes, showing Keiko during Yusuke's fight to parallel the two of them and show how similar they are, flashing to the others to show their reactions during Genkai's final fight with Toguro, etc). There are a *lot* of characters, just like dbz, but even the minor characters are given growth (in half the episodes of dbz). The previous opponents do have a habit of becoming good (like dbz - Piccolo, Vegeta), but it makes sense for them - they were never 'bad' to begin with, merely on the opposite side (of a tournament no less). The fights, as much as they do take up a large part of the anime, vary each and every time. The plot doesn't repeat itself over and over (just think of that plot twist in the final tournament - no one would have guessed how that tournament would end) - there are 'missions' - separate substories with minor fights, detailed tournament style fights (rather like dbz there), and large 'world-saving' fights (sensui - could be compared to cell) - but each one ends with some sort of twist that is nothing like dbz. Even the build up tends to be different if you think of Toguro and Sensui as being the main 'world-endangering' villains.

Pretty much everything I like about dbz can be seen in YYH, but YYH has a lot that dbz lacks (for me) - the characters themselves are so varied (a lot more than comparing Bulma/Krillin/Yamcha as the lackeys) - as 'minor' characters, Kurama and Hiei have at least as much character building as the two main ones. And it's so condensed. Hiei's entire history is told in about one episode, his entire character is defined in 20 minutes to the point where you understand everything about his character. Kurama's history is spread out more, but even his story doesn't take up more than an episode or two, yet it doesn't feel weak at all.

My point, is that yes, I agree YYH and DBZ *do* have a lot of themes in common in my opinion, but YYH is better to me because while it has all the things I like about dbz, it doesn't have any of the things I *dislike* about dbz. And it has a lot that dbz doesn't have - like the romances. I doubt many people would say dbz did well with its romances (Videl - blackmail, rescue-type femininity, bossy female; Bulma - bossy female, arguing, spoiled attitude - with both Yamcha and Vegeta; Chi-chi - bossy, stubborn, fighting, bossy; Android 18 is the only exception and that 'romance' is so fake it's funny - no offense intended). YYH on the other hand has all *sorts* of romances mixed into the story, everything from the main character and Keiko to Genkai and Toguro (wtf - talk about odd romances).

Yeah, I don't mind having people put DBZ and YYH in the same category - but you have to recognize where YYH differs. I think it has even more focus on drama and the characters than dbz does - for all that it's much shorter.

Funny how alot of people on here consider an episode with no fighting a filler.. lol, that's a load of crap. Everything is story up until the main fight, and the main fight is really the ONLY time things drag out..but either way, in the original, they don't scream insults at one anothr for 30 minutes, and when they DO talk they say something that's WORTH listening to.. unlike the dub..but as I said, if that bugs you so damn much, skip over parts of it...

k, k that's all for me, Dragonball Z is a great anime to me, and if anyone else is interested in it, i'd love to chat with you. ^_^ Please email me!
Akira Toryama (sp?) even said so himself. Directly from the japanese version. Fight scenes with 10 minuites of back and forth banter and rediculious laughing and 30 seconds of fighting is FILLER.
Oh really? I read an interview where Akira said.. "I enjoyed the anime.." saying how they did a good job and such.. it's true though, even HE isn't completely happy with his manga...I just hope he knows how many people worldwide love and respect him for making Dragonball.

If you all want to see a pointless filler anime, watch Dragonball GT.

Everyone in japan wanted more Dragonball Z when it ended.. GT just ruined everything because it had NO HEART, NO CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, NO PLOT, NO DEPTH, NO AKIRA TORIYAMA.. and yeah it had A TON of fighting..to me, GT is a complete filler anime.. the only parts even worth watching are the Vegeta and Bulma scenes.. so in other words, no one ever got SICK of dbz in japan, it's just they knew Akira wasn't coming back, so it was time to stop.

Any true fan could really careless about the fighting, to us, it's all about the characters, story and drama.. You'll find stupid fans out there for any anime.. so don't even call dbz fans immature and inexperienced, we KNOW what we like, and we know how much love Dragonball Z holds..

Well bye, this is my last post I guess.. I mean, how many times can you reply to DBZ IS A BIG FILLER, and FIGHTING DRAGS ON posts.. it gets on your nerves after awhile. *heads about ready to explode* lol.

kearlywi, sorry, I guess I just took your post the wrong way.

Some of my favorite animes are:

Dragonball is first of course..
Ranma 1/2
Bubblegum Crisis(haven't seen the new series)
Haunted Junction
Spirited Away (I LOVED this one)
Silent Mobius
Project A-ko (only the first movie though)
Serial Experiments Lain
Vampire Hunter D: Blood Lust (GREAT movie)
Perfect Blue
Gunsmith Cats
Battle Angel (Soooo sad!)

I've still got Record of Lodoss War to watch, and Metropolis.. just got them not to long ago. None of the above are in any particular order..except Dbz. and I've really gotten into Trigun.. it's an awesome anime.. I don't watch adult swim much for some reason though..o.O

I've seen the YYH movie, it wasn't that great, but I need to get the series.. movies are never a good thing to go by..

Sailormoon is what really introduced me to anime, I have alot of respect for it..

Was it the 2o minute movie or the longer one? The short one is fluff, and the longer one doesn't really add much unless you're a Kurama-fan (tells more about his history and builds on his character, plus you get to see some flashiness from the other characters, Hiei particularly). It's a pretty movie, but no - it doesn't really reflect the anime. Too dark and flashy. ^_^;
