Angelic Layer Dubbed Version

Post by Onideus_Mad_Hatter » Thu Dec 11, 2003 6:24 am

Well, I watched the first episode and thankfully they got someone good to do the voice of Misaki. The person who does the voice for her aunt is also pretty good. On a down note though the two guys they got to do Ichan and his underling just suck ass. I mean, WOW, could they sound any more like they were reading a script? *shakes head* The person who does Misaki's voice is Jessica Boone. Can't remember any of the other ones off the top of my head. It'll be interesting to see how the other characters sound in English. I was really afraid the dub job was gonna completely suck, but really as long as Misaki sounds really good the rest of the characters don't matter ~too~ much.

I always love dubs, even if they're not done that well, I still like em. In some ways it's like getting to watch an anime series all over again as if you had never seen it. ^_^

And sometimes on a rare occasion I even like the dub version better than the subbed version! I, My, Me Strawberry Eggs is a good example, I dunno why, but I just think the dubbed version sounds better. *shrugs*

So the dub of Angelic Layer is pretty decent, right? I was kinda of worried of how ADV can handle the dubbing of a Clamp anime (Miyuki-chan in Wonderland DOESN'T count since there's no dub version even though ADV released it). I sorto of wished that Pioneer (or Geneon) released it since they did pretty good job with Cardcaptor Sakura, X, and Chobits.

I think so, although I'm only going by the first episode. The big thing though is that Misaki's VA is real good.

Here's some samples:

I haven't seen the dubbed version of CCS movie 2, was it pretty good?

Wow! The English VA for Misaki is pretty good. It's almost believable. As for the CCS Movie 2, here's a link for a review from the Anime News Network.

Maybe ADV should hire VAs from Coastal Carolina Studios next time. They use kids in their dubbing (if you don't believe me, check out Your Under Arrest OVA).

Personally I think they sound like cartoon characters, both English and Japanese. I dunno, maybe it's cause I watch a lot Japanese movies and tv shows, but to me most anime voices sound like 20-30 year old Japanese women trying to sound young and cute. *shrugs* Suppose it's a matter of persepctive.

I liked the dubs

I have a friend who's a huge Angelic Layer fan and she's always raving about it...so when I saw the dub on a shelf at Best Buy I had to check it out. It was my first time watching AL and I liked it a lot. The dubbing seemed all right...but then, I've seen some truly horrible dubbing in the past, so maybe I'm not the best judge. I showed it to my cousin (who isn't really an anime fan) and she thought it was cool, so I'm happy.

Angelic Layer is one of, if not my most favorite anime series. The story, the characters, the perfect blend of action and emotion/drama...really a great series. I consider it to be right up there with Read or Dream and Kiddy Grade. I always feel sorry for the people whose only real exposure to anime is the slop they show on Cartoon Network. I'm a big fan of Tenchi, DB/Z/GT, Trigun, etc as much as the next guy, but in my opinion those series just pale in comparison to some of the other anime out there.

I was really hoping that the dub would feature Johnny Yong Bosch as Ichan. If you've heard his original Japanese voice, know what else this seiyuu has done, and know what else Bosch has done... I think would have been a really neat and fitting role-revival ^^;;.
