Try replacing the drive with another one... (CD or DVD) If the same thing happens, it's time to wipe your computer (Format and re-install).
You could look for the precise problem, but the more often you can wipe your computer and start again, the more healthy it will be.
However, if you're computer isn't the problem, rip out your drive, and curse it to burn in HELL!
DVD drives really aren't that expensive anymore. Do yourself the favor of getting a new one.
