My parents like: all Studio Ghibli movies (especially Spirited Away and Laputa), Voices of a Distant Star, Fruits Basket, Ah! My Goddess (the movie and the series), and Inuyasha.

They actually liked Battle Royale too. That's not anime... but it was shocking that they liked it. My mom was talking about that movie for weeks after we watched it.

Hey, here's a related story: I was on vacation with my family at some friends' house in another state and one of my old friends gave me the anime Chobits to watch...thinking from the pics on the DVD that it would be some kind of light, girly anime, I saw no reason why I couldn't watch it with my mom there. I put in the first episode and got up to the point where Hideki had to, well, press the switch to turn on his persacom. *Sigh!*...long story short, it was a bad idea. Don't show Chobits to your parents!
You're lucky... I've decided to let you live to see the day when I will rule the world.

Suggestions from a Christan parent,

There are quite a few series that are inoffensive, but a series would require too much of their time. Go with a one disc movie. There have been some really good suggestions. I would go with Studio Ghibli, Laputa (Castle in the Sky), Princess Mononoke, or Spirited Away would be my choises. They are exellent anime and suitable for any audience over elementary school age. Some interesting morality play in them also. If they are interested in historical shows, go with Grave of the Fireflies, it is very interesting from a histoical point of view. Millenium Actress is only subbed, but is a great story, perhaps a little complex for children to understand but an interesting story of romantic obsession for adults (no sex, little violence).

Actually your dad may be interested in trying to understand the "whys" of the religious references in many animes. Did you know that Christanity was a major religion in Japan before the Shogun outlawed it and tried to destroy it. That was one of the reasons they closed japan off from the world for many years.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

Heh, maybe have him read this thread on the board, and have him see all the considerations we're putting in.

...Actually, that's not a bad idea.
Another pointless post!

Chobits show bits

Post by HeavyMetal » Sun Jun 06, 2004 11:30 pm

Yeah the first episode of Chobits is utter fan service no matter how cute and innocent it is portrayed.

Hey, you have to have something to keep people's interest long enough to establish a story. Why not an episode dedicated to finding and discovering the meaning of underwear.
