Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi

Post by Lone Wolf » Tue Aug 03, 2004 12:23 am

Well, instead of getting an Eva: Platinum, I got the first two DVDs of this series because I wanted something new. HOLY SHAZBOT that was money well spent! This show is amazing! The fact that it's made by Gainax definitely hinted to greatness.

The animation quality is astounding. The voice-overs are great. The colors are extremely vibrant. This show includes almost every genre (drama, comedy, mystery, action, etc.) and story setting (space mecha, old 30's detective style, prehistoric world, tournament fighting, normal everyday world, etc.) imaginable. There is also a TON of references to other animes (the Eva battle music even plays in here!) and culture icons (the main character becomes Bruce Lee for a short moment...I think).

I am completely in awe! I must now go out and buy the other DVDs soon! This show has earned the "Lone Wolf Seal of Approval"!

Of course the animation is astounding; it was animated by Madhouse. :P

Wait till you get to the American movie parody episode.

Oh, and the war parody ep. is golden too...

I already have the whole series (with box no less). Trust me, you picked a real good one.

So how is this compared to Excel Saga?

It's like ES because each episode has a theme. The "Fantasy RPG episode," the "Mecha" episode...likie Excel has the "sports," the "sappy love story" the "horror flick" themes. I think I got more of the jokes in Abenobashi then Excel Saga though. It doesn't seem to be as culture based...or has more American culture references.

I saw the first four eps at Otakon. I was laughing so hard I started crying uncontrollably and I couldn't stop.

Well, I emptied my pocket and got the last two DVDs. I was not disappointed at all. This is great.

A thought came to mind though...shouldn't I have waited till I had seen the entire series before I rated it? It would make more sense...

I posted a few pics here.

Weird Screencaps post from the movie parody episode.

Also, in that fight episode, he does a bit more than turn into bruce Lee, he also somehow manages to channel the Fist of the North Star, Goku, and I think briefly Ranma, and posibly Tetsuo.

I agree, this one is money well spent. There are so many references and gags that you would have to be pretty handy on the pause button to see them. Like when the falling building collapses, right after Jaws gets blown up and the roof turns into the Titanic, you see the band, That funky priest, some powerpuff girls, and Elvis falling.

Abenobashi > Excel.

Yeah, it is quite the badass series. It's hilarious.

I saw my first episode of it a month ago. I was surprised.

I love Abenobashi! I saw my first episode in a sample DVD from New Type. The animation kicks ass. (nod)

Abenobashi..lol..that show is hilarious. Although I liked Excel Saga better. I can't wait till I get the manga in the mail..I ordered the first volume. The outtakes on the dvds were also funny.
