War anime

Post by Paul Kievits » Fri Aug 13, 2004 8:18 am

Since I'm not THE anime geek I thought I'd ask this question here since somebody might know...

Are there any anime which contain scenes of modern day warfare? With this I mean wars with tanks, helicopters, infantry etc... as opposed to wars in space or with mecha's of any sort. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Jin Roh's got futuristic armor, but other than that it's pretty much based on modern warfare. I'd also suggest giving Memories a look--the second "ep" isn't about a war, per se, but it features tanks, helicopters, etc. The third ep is downright about warfare, and though it's basically about operating a massive gun turret (it's kinda sci-fi in that respect) it has the feel of being set in WWII--of the three "eps" in Memories, it's probably my favorite.

Silent Service is about as realistic to modern war as anime gets right now. It's basically about a Seawolf class submarine built by the Japanese that takes on the US Navy.

Minus the mecha, Gasaraki is pretty realisitc and eerily ironic, considering the US is in Iraq now. In Gasaraki it's a UN action in a middle eastern country called Belgistan.

Hmm, Grave of the Fireflies I guess, is not exactly what he's searching for. ;) (But a BRILLIANT anti-war movie of course)
Since you're searching for modern day warfare, you might as well ignore this postl, but "Barefoot Gen", a movie about the Hiroshima bombing, is some pretty heavy stuff. (pretty graphic movie, and a-bombs are always a topic.)

I just remembered Area 88. While kinda an oldy, it does use fairly modern fighter planes, once again set in a feuding middle eastern country.

You really aren't going to find a lot of modern warfare Japanese entertainment. The constituion ban on war as a means of diplomacy pretty much rules out any realistic possibility of the JSDF ever fighting anyone. Most of the time I recall the JSDF ever showing up were usually to fight Godzilla-like monsters or to serve as cannon fodder for mecha.
