The end of fansubs?

I really hope they back off of fan sub's. I have purchased a legit copy of almost every anime I have ever seen fan subbed! *have a few titles that are still not released over here and there have been a few here and there that were completly NOT what I expected and really did not care to see again.
I must say that it will be very difficult for me to purchase anything new with out the fan subs. Anime is very expensive as you all well know.... I cannot afford to just drop 100$ or more on a title with just a review to guide me. Every one's op is different and I find my ops to differ greatly from the ops of others. I don't see where the fan subbers are making or taking any money from the big production studios by doing fan subs. I agree that it is and should be viewed as a FREE promotion/advertisment that will spark intrest in a new title. I really don't hold much hope in writing or asking companies to bring new titles overhere. I am going through that right now with a manga series that they have just recently released in English (2 books for far) and the company *who will remain un-named* FINALLY emailed me back after MANY, requests to tell me that there is no scheduled release date for any of the rest of the titles. AHHHHHHH. So with out fan sub's and translations I WOULD NEVER have had this I assume, as this is my all time FAVORITE anime but by just reading the reviews and what they have done to it so far in English..... well its just a bit different shall we say.
As for this situtation and its effects on AMV's I am just hoping that they will leave us alone because I have d/l'd many AMV's that have brought me to purchase new anime for my collection. Its a wonderful way (I think) to support your favorite(s) anime and increase its support/fan base.
BTW.....

Perhaps a bit of a tangent, but what exactly does MFI produce? I don't think I've heard the name before.

I think part of it may be that the Japanese companies want control over the translation itself and the quality thereof, so they're worried that fansubbers will screw up the anime by either translating it incorrectly or just not translating it well. I could especially see the makers of Naruto doing that, since apparently Naruto is Jesus and everyone has to get in line to worship its holy name with a $3.5trillion license.
From what I've heard, the Japanese companies can be really picky about the English translations, such as keeping the original names, despite not being properly phonetically spelled in English.

I'll be perfectly blunt...I'm pretty skeptical with a lot of anime...as such, I tend to use fansubs for previewing a lot of titles (to date, the only anime I've ever bought purely on word of mouth was Berserk...luckily, that one was worth it.)
Hell, what subs I've kept over the years, I've since made it point to start buying legitimate copies of (fansubs got me to buy DBZ movie 8, have put me on the waiting list for the Zeta Gundam boxset once it finally ships, and have had me waiting for the first sign of Nausicaa's release...)
That said, this could prove awkward for me...especially since I've learned to take word of mouth with a degree of caution ever since getting burned by EVA
Still...if that's how they want it...

Unpronounceable ... I see your point and I agree (wonders what they think of the English version of Yami No Matsuei!! - so very wrong). I have never seen a fan sub that sucked as bad as some English/American dub release of some anime (YnM being a prime example). HOWEVER, I think that is of little concern as they could find an American Co. to release thier title with thier input and some amount of creative control (above example excluded for some reason far beyond the reaches of my mental capacity).

Holy *hit I had no idea they wanted so much money for its license... no wonder there is little hope of its release.... what is it inked in the creators blood??? *note that I have not seen this anime yet... but it has my interest now....Naruto is Jesus and everyone has to get in line to worship its holy name with a $3.5trillion license.

Yea, I'm gonna miss School Rumble, they better have it licensed soon (lest I look for it elsewhere...). It was one of only 3 series I was following up to yesterday (and even then, I sort of fell behind on another one...).
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

You're lucky then...you missed AnimeJunkies in its heyday...Kazutaka wrote:Unpronounceable ... They developed an infamy for any number of odd typos in their animes ranging from Nascar-class ships in Gundam SEED (actually Nazca), and the all too well known 'Mass naked child events' sub from Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex

Oh my.
I know there is no way to really control someone else trying to "interpret" your work. I would hope that the people out there who do fan subs would at least TRY to make things authentic; I know I would try my best to keep EVERYTHING as original as possible. In short if you are going to do something then do it right or don't even try to do it at all. But then maybe my standards are a bit higher than some
I am glad that I missed that! Did someone do them justice by taking them out back and putting them up against the wall? I do hope so. If not perhaps we can arrange for K to come round and blow up thier building and put a stop to this madness!!
