AMV DVDs - How many people do this?

There's a pretty big difference in some of the AMV DVDs people are talking about, here.

On one hand, you have DVDs you make by simply downloading videos and making DVDs with them. With this, you really can't get much better quality than what you get for downloads. Granted, people can make some pretty sexy XviD encodes, but even still, you're really only watching your downloaded videos on DVD. To top it off, unless you're doing all the conversions yourself and filtering them (as opposed to just letting those low-end programs do it all themselves), you're probably gonna lose more visual quality than you should have to by recompressing the already-compressed videos. If you're not really doing anything other than making them just to kick back and watch, it's not that big a deal, though.

On the other hand, you've got DVDs that the actual creators author and distribute themselves from the raw masters they keep of their work. These are generally very cool items to have, and tend to be passed around at conventions for either super-cheap or free (blank DVDs still cost just a bit more than CDs). The creators, themselves, tend to be the ones that take the most care with their videos for the DVD distribution.

If you don't have a DVD burning program or DVD+RW drive on your pc, you're out of luck. If have you a program like Sonic MyDVD, (which can accept these video file formats .wmv, .mpg, .mpeg, and .avi) the controls should be very easy to figure out.

I would never author a dvd unless I had good 720 x 480 sources for it.

Of course those old video game commercials can't be helped...

I usually refrain from wasting bandwidth on a DVD, with the notable exception of the DVDs I distribute free (and with no self-advertising either) at conferences. These include the Viewer's Choice award for the year at Nandesukan, and, this year, Bleach.
Both are transcoded from a decent 720x480 to a 722x480 (?) at 6Mbps VBR, Japan Style (VFR, with field order meaning top frame first). Too bad it has to mean "RGB" space. Authoring is done with TMPGEnc Express and TMPGEnc DVD Author for the Bleach vids (I have a very good photochopped menu template for it created from scratch), and TMPGEnc Express and DVD-Lab for the Viewer's Choice.

Two years ago it was Super VCDs I was handing to my colleagues :S

I also must add: If any creators are willing to send me a production source masters, through either fast data line or DVD-Data discs. I will provide DVD+R DL if needed and of course I will provide the UPS shipping label for you. This means I can author the DVD with a better source. When I'm done encoding, copies go out to those who ask.

Offtopic, I've found that DVD encoding is subpar anyways... go ahead and NTSC 29.97 my *** dvd specs. Japan's gone to DVB-T (Terrestrial Packet Radio digital) or IPv6/RTSP(?) with AVC/ITU-T H.264 VFR, progressive YUYs. I'm waiting for Blu-Ray adoption!

I've been working on a DVD "AMV Album", featuring several videos a freind of mind made for Jay Z's "Black Album" using Naruto (he's on vacation riught now, so he's left me with a task)

Has anyone else made an AMV "Album" DVD featuring one specific artist?
