Up until 3 weeks ago I can honestly say that I never cried while watching an anime. That was until I watched the ending of Elfen Lied. My god the emotion in the episode was intense. I didn't open bawl my eyes out but the eyes started to water real well.

The closest to crying I've ever been is:
Makoto Shinkai's work. Man he is something.
Both Hoshi No Koe(Voices of a Distant Star) and Kumo no Mukou(Beyond the clouds, The promised place in our early days) were....just beyond words. Beautiful.
Tokyo Godfathers
Some of Studio Ghibli's works
There were others[NGE, RAH, FLCL, etc.] where I felt emotional as well, but those[above] are pretty close to the limit as of now.
I've done a lot of Azumanga Daioh-:laughoutloudstomachhurtsverymuchtearrunsdowncheek: kind of crying though.

I have never cried while watching anime. But, I have gotten close on Grave of the Fireflies. If that movie would have gotten any sader, I think I would have started to cry. Also Voices of a Distant Star was a sad one for me to watch. I was close to crying but not as close with Grave of the Fireflies

.... One show comes instantly to mind as I read this topic:
Beserk.
The last episode of that had me in constant tears. The first time I'd ever really cried on a movie.
Before that Samurai X: Reflection and Samurai X: Betrayal both came close to letting the tears slip out.
*sniffle* Beserk.... I agree with you wholeheartedly on that one Matticans.

I don't think I've ever actually full-out cried watching an anime, but the end of Azumanga Daioh made me tear up a little because it reminded me of my impending college graduation.
I was pretty sad in episode 23 of X as well (when Sorata dies).
The episode mentioned earlier from RahXephon really got to me, but I still didn't cry over it.
I guess the 2nd anime moment I've come closest to crying from would be when (Wolfwood dies) in Trigun. It was very messed up.

Ok I dont normally cry during animes but here was the first time.
When Vegeta sacrifices himself to kill Fat Buu I had some tears in my eyes. Mainly cause he gave that whole speech about protecting Bulma and Trunks. You knew it was gonna happen and it well....it was emotional.
Oh ye and also in Trigun--SPOILERS--
I was sooo sad and yet I was pissed off beyond reasoning. It was one of those "DAM you "insert villian" I'll KILL YOU!!!!!!!! moments.

I cried when Roy Fokker and Ben Dixon died in the Macross Saga... Just was unexpected and knocked the wind out of me. I was young at the time and was not used to seeing that with my cartoons.
A lot of things brought tears to my eyes with Wolf's Rain, but I cried when Hub had Cher die in his arms... his grief was so overwhelming...it felt real.
A lot of what I saw in Revoluntionary Girl Utena was heart breaking, but the end had me in tears.
Those are the ones that stand out in my mind for the moment. There are certainly many more that I cannot think of. There is more risk taking and drama in anime than in most of American television or main stream movies.

Once on Sailor Moon R and twice on S. I got a little teary-eyed both on R when the senshi got kidnapped by the Black Moon people because ChibiUSA was being her usual bratty self and Usagi bawled her out and when Uranus and Neptune got "killed" by Eudial in the middle of S. I all out cried at that agonizingly long part at the end of S when Sailor Moon was helpless to save Saturn. All of those moments I remember quite vividly because they were so emotional. I was like 10 or 11 I think. I know you probably think that's a little old to be crying on a kids' show, but where I come from kids don't grow up as fast as they do here, and besides, particularly that ending to S was unlike any kids' show I have ever seen. To this day it is one of the most important moments in anime for me personally. It alone prompted me to watch more. I have never cried on any other anime since then. I felt like crying many times but it never happened.
