Favorite anime directed by Carl Macek
Carl Macek is an icon. He's one of the two men responsible for putting "Robotech" together. He also directed the english dubs for animes like All three Dirty Pair movies, Vampire Hunter D, Silent Mobius, Golgo 13, Fist of the North Star, as well as several others. The man's a legend, and an icon. I've idolized him for quite a while now.

He is also called the "Anime Anti-Christ"... he butchered the story lines of Macross, Southern Cross, and Mosepeda. He changed the voice characterizations of the characters so drastically, they seem like completely different people. Listen to Minmei's Japanese voice actor and you get a completely different impression of the character.
He did a lot to bring anime here to the states, but.....
I am sorry...I look back on some of it with nostalgia, but how it was presented and now I just cringe.

Hehe it's a love hate thing. The more I learned about the real Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada story lines the more I shook my head. However, I must admit that given the fact that he needed to produce a long series that would make it over here in the US, I forgive him for butchering it. I don't think anime at the time made it over in a pure form. I recall Battle of the Planets (aka Gatchamen) being severely butchered as well.bobbarker31 wrote:He is also called the "Anime Anti-Christ"... he butchered the story lines of Macross, Southern Cross, and Mosepeda. And just what's so bad about Reba West/Rebecca Forstadt (who's one of my favorite VAs) doing Minmei's voice? I thought she did great. I also liked her singing voice. I'm surprised she didn't record an album.bobbarker31 wrote:He is also called the "Anime Anti-Christ"... he butchered the story lines of Macross, Southern Cross, and Mosepeda. The nature of the character was changed and I dare say the personality. They seem to do a better job these days of trying to match the director's intention to what the characters should sound like. Many of the nuances were not there. It sounded just like another loud bombastic Saturday morning American cartoon. Trust me I would never have thought I would say this before I watched the original Macross in Japanese. I used to like the Reba West songs, but the songs as they were originally recorded in Japanese are in my opinion BETTER.RamonesFan2020204 wrote:And just what's so bad about Reba West/Rebecca Forstadt (who's one of my favorite VAs) doing Minmei's voice? Unfortunately, can't make a definite ruling, having only seen two of his jobs.
Robotech, for its flaws, I at least give him credit for trying on. While it missed in a few areas, some parts actually worked pretty nicely.
Seems his edge has dulled over the years however.
Check out his treatment of Aura Battler Dunbine to see what I mean...actually...maybe it's best not to.
First off, the dub is probably one of the worst I've ever heard (and, as a rule, I will try to find redeeming qualities in most any dub. This one's up there with Macross II on the 'I just can't watch this dubbed' level)
In attempting to give Byston Well a distinct feel, Macek caused some of the worst accents imaginable. As in, if it wasn't for the fact he just sticks to British/Irish accents this time around, he'd prob. wind up getting some hostile letters from offended groups.
In turn, the subs aren't exactly much better. Several grammatical errors and repeated inconsistencies in the spellings give the feel of watching HK bootlegs.
Suffice to say, it seem Carl's lost a lot of his skill lately.

That said, I admit to never actually having seen any Macek properties, as I'm a relative newcomer to anime (2002) and haven't watched almost any of the older (mid-90s and earlier) favorites.Carl Macek wrote:No, it wasn't due to the popularity of X-Men, but rather, to cash in on the American belief that all anime is porn!... And THAT's why we decided to call it "Samurai X".
