Making all opinions public

I wonder why to make opinions public is

a) the editors choice
b) is limited to 2 op's

To have all opinions public would imho have a couple of advantages:

- With the given system for example, an editor can make public dishonest op's which give him high scores while hiding the honest ones with lower scores. With public op's this is impossible.

- Reviewers can improve their abilities by reading a wider variety of other op's.

- Someone who downloads the AMV has a better chance to inform. Especially for people with bandwith restrictions this may be from interest, but not only.

- Possibly the quality of the op's rises, since some people think more about what they write if they know it becomes public or refrain from oping at all (have the straight 1s and 10s in mind).

- If the quality of the op's rises it is also an advantage for the editor, 'cause he/she can better learn how to improve.

I believe the logic behind it is that opinions are intended for the creator, not for people who are thinking of downloading a video. Still, I agree it would be nice if you could make all your opinions public.

Hmm, I seem to remember that it was limited (and not public by default) so that people would form their own ops, rather than "being influenced" by the ops written by others.

I can be mistaken though, I've frequented quite a number of place with "ops systems" in the past, so perhaps this was something I found on another site.

You are right, this was exactly what Phade wanted when he put the system in place.

While it looks like a good reason in first place, I still believe it's contraproductiv. How should one who writes op's improve if not by reading op's from others? The guide for opinions is good to begin with, not more. So as long as the big majority of op's isn't public, noone should complain about the hughe amount of useless op's.

Being influenced from others isn't a bad thing. For example, there are no restrictions for creators to get influenced from other AMV's. And mostly it brings improvement.

Well, once you write an op for a video, you can see all of the other ops left for that video. And you can always edit yours once.

And I don't think making all ops public will necessarily make or influence everyone to leave better opinions. Better opinions, I think, come from experience- learning more what makes an AMV "good" or "bad" (at least in your own eyes) and how to respond to the different elements in a video. And if you're thinking public ops will teach you to write better, they won't- good clear writing is just something that one has to learn on one's own.

Besides, there will always be the noobs who leave the "OMG THIS VIDEO WUZ TEH ROCK-ZORS" or the "WTF THIS VIDEO SUKS 4$$" opinions (unless, of course, there were some sort of system that wouldn't let new members give opinions- however, just because someone has been on the site for several years doesn't necessarily mean they won't leave that kind of opinion).

If you read a bunch of favorable or unfavorable opinions that cite specific things in a video, you will focus more on the things mentioned than the things they don't mention when writing your own opinion. Thus, the blind/limited opinion views.

People that read a lot tend to be better at expressing themselves in written language, although your mileage may vary depending on what you read the most. I've noticed that people that read a lot of non-fiction and textbooks tend to write more dryly and matter-of-fact-like than people who read primarily fiction.

Watching a large amount of and wide variety of AMVs (or just music videos in general) will probably make you a better opinion-giver in terms of video editing. Or simply by making your own videos. However, the perspective you have when critiquing things will be different depending on your personal background.

Therefore, I think the current system is fine. Keeping the majority of your opinions hidden would probably influence people who didn't have strong feelings already about the video and letting the creator choose which two they can display allows for them to endorse their videos or highlight reviews they think are important for whatever reason.

If a creator cares they can easily help this by mentioning problems they know about in the description. I've often said things like "The video quality sucks. Since you mentioned it yourself I won't bother going on a rant about it. Moving on..."

And also there are times that you might think something isn't a problem, but everyone else does and the only way to get that through to some people is by virtue of repetition.
