New Macross Plus Vid - First time using VOBs.

Post by Dark4554 » Tue Aug 02, 2005 10:23 am

Hey guys,

Just finished my new Macross Plus video, which I've been working on for what seems like an eternity... Finally ironed out all the issues working with a straight DVD rip, and ~man~ does it look good. As far as it being a good AMV; that's up to you. I was going to make something with a more current anime, but I decided to reach back into the past for some inspiration. ^^

If this AMV has a gimmick, it's my use of stray scenes to bring two different sequences together to look like one; I'm pretty happy with it.

I copied the comments below:

Two Pilots. One is brash, cocky, passionate, and human to a fault. The other is cold, calculating, unrelenting, and will take advantage of any situation. Facing off, we'd like to say that good should always prevail, but the reality is uncertain. "I'll clip your wings" both pilots think, as they chase each other through the sky.

Quick note on the music: Yes, that actually IS the begining of the song making all those strange nosies. Without it, it starts to abruptly, so I kept it and used it for my slates. That is part of the original song, and there's nothing wrong with your player. :b

Overall, this is an explosive VS. video, with some character profiling thrown in. It's my attempt at a faster video, but a story always manages to creep in a slow it down a bit. ^^; Basically, I've taken several sequences of the two test pilots flying against each other, tailored them to the music and lyrics, and stitched them together to creator one smooth motion. The whole video is suppose to sort of feel like one sorti, more or less. (I realize it's not exactly the case) There is a blend of cuts that follow the original animation, but also shots that have been seamlessly inserted to bring different things together. It will make you go back to the original anime and check to see just what I did. You'll find there's a lot more going on than it appears, and that's what I wanted: a naturally moving AMV. Ending is strange, I know... after torturing myself for a long time, that's what I went with.

Tech Notes:

This AMV is especially important because it is bringing a new era of quality to my work. After much reading and adapting, I'm FINALLY EDITING OFF VOBS! It's painful, but to have truly deinterlaced 24fps videos that look as good as the DVD they come off of, it's worth it. This work has been going on for months, simply because I would make mistakes on the AVISynth/VirtualDub side and have to start all over.. Especially my mistake of working with the video, and THEN turning on the deinterlacing and reducing the video from 30 fps to 24fps and having all my tight edits go off by several frames each. What a nightmare. Stupid, I know...

Also, regarding the strange resolution; it's a result of the original DVDs having the video cropped to TV safe area's only... So I had a black border when I ripped the video. I cropped this out of the final render, but was advised not to strech it to 640x480. Not really important, and completely un-noticable.

Anyways, lots of blood sweat and tears, like any AMV I guess. But it looks reaaaally purdy. Gotta love that. :3
