Releasing Videos (When should you do it?)

Post by genestarwind21122 » Tue Sep 27, 2005 7:19 am

I finally finished my new video. Now I'm wondering when to release it. i know this sounds stupid, but I know certain creators like VicBond007, Senta Miller, Dwchang, dokidoki, and Vlad don't release theirs until after the contest. I was wondering why is that. Should I release it now, after the AUSA deadline or after AUSA. This is diffidently hard because I've worked on this video for so long and yet I don't know what to do? Do you think it affects your video if you release it before a contest? If so do you think it is positive or negative for the video.

I would suggest to Announce and so to Release it exactly when you finished it. In my opinion you should not think about "When is positive or when is negative". So, Imo you should release it now. :)

First, read the contest rules. Some contests don't allow to have it released before.

If it's allowed, I would release it when I'm finished. I don't think it has any influence at the contest itself. The only thing that I can imagine is that a pre-released video get's some prejustice, which kann be positive or negative. If the contest is hold by judges and not the auditorium, it shouldn't have any influence.

By letting people view your video prior to the contest you allow for it to loose it's freshness in their mind and for them to find flaws in it. If your interested in winning an award at a con i'd wait since there becomes an increased chance that people will have seen it before and vote for something else because of that fact. The first impression is most important for con (audience) voting because most voters only get one chance to see what you made and won't notice flaws until after repeated viewings (especially in comedy and action categories).

This entire line of reasoning goes out the window, however, if your video is either a true gem or you don't care about winning contests. In the later case, i'd release it now...

I always wait until after the contest to announce it, even if I'm totally itching to get the video out there. Occasionally I'll quietly put the video online a few days before the contest and not tell anybody about it.
I have no idea how to use this new forum.

I like for my videos to be a surprise to people watching the contest. The quality of my video dictates what sort of surprise they get, of course.

I agree... I feel that it's more of a Treat for the audiance of a convention to see it before releasing it here on the org... PLUS I think it's more fair that way rather then pumping it up prior to the contest (in the case of AWA pro, it keeps it more blind)

Besides, if people want to see it, it will not make a difference if it's put up after anyway
