Is is worth it?

Post by Adv1sor » Sat Jan 21, 2006 3:45 pm

I have been using WMM2 and having fun cranking out the AMVs. WMM2 is easy to use but does lock up now and then and does have it's limits.

Last night I dl's Sony's Vegas program, the free trial. I was very impressed with the multiple tracks, the flexibility, and the more professional feel of the program. But it is not nearly as easy to use as the old WMM2.

So, I guess what I am asking is, for an average AMV maker. A person who spends maybe four or five hours a week making AMVs. Is it worth it to lay out a few bucks, ($80 in this case), and take the time to learn a better program?

A personal question to be sure, but for all those editors out there who haven't gone to Abode, what do you think?

Well I have to say it is worth it. I did my first amv in WMM and then I went to MGI Video Wave 4 which was a slightly more advance program, then Movie Star 5, then Video Wave 7, then Pinnacle Studios 8 and now Adobe Priemere 6.0. It is worth some money to advance and have a better program to use. It all depends on what you want to get out of your amv's.

i think it really depends if /you/ want to make the move. is it worth it to you to have a more powerful program? is it worth it to you to learn something new? In my opinion, it's always worth upgrading (unless you're upgrading to something that really wouldnt make a difference).

I use premiere, but i've used vegas. if you have $80, Sony Vegas Media Studio 6 is a great choice. but, just to be fair, Premiere isn't a bad program and you have way more flexibility when it comes to editing with DVD footage via avisynth. Premiere Elements is about the same price and in my opnion easier to learn.

Between the two professional versions, they are equal in my eyes. they both have pro's and cons. With the lesser versions, vegas ms 6 loses some of the pros i liked about the prefessional version, while Premiere elements is still very much the same minus some extra features i never use often.

before you make a decision, i would suggest downloading the trial of Premiere elements as well and see if thats better suited. if not, then definatly upgrade to Vegas. whatever the choice, upgrading is a good idea, imo.

I know this may not apply to you very well, cause I am one of those that has moved to Adobe, but just not in the way most do... (insert Adobe propaganda here)

Personally, I think it's very much worth it. I have loathed WMM from the begginning for various reasons and almost gave up on it all until I could afford a half-decent program. I was extrememly fortunate to find a limited version of Premier 6 that came with my wife's computer, and although it took a bit of learning, I must say that I'm very grateful to have a stable program that has some great features. Features that WMM will likely never have.

So, I think it's worth it in your case to take that next step to grow as an AMV creator. Even if you only use it a few hours a week. You'll probably find that learning a new program won't be all that taxing anyway cause you already know how to edit. So there's my two cents.

It's a good idea to test out several editing programs to find the one that's right for you. I tried multiple products, including Vegas, before I settled on Premiere Elements. Think of the time you spend learning different editors as an investment in your future AMVs.

shoulda went and got Premeire or Premeire Elemants, much easier than Vegas. My copy of Premeire Pro quit loading clips for me so until I reinstalled Windows (in the process of backing up... but I got mep clips to do b4 I do) I won't have it. So I tried a few others. WMM I immediateley got into. Easy as pie (easIER than pi ;p) BUT it friggen freezed on me whenever I tried to modify a clip in any way (lol yes, my system is REALLY screwed up). I then tried Pinnacle Studio cuz I had it off hand. Also easy... but it would only do mpegs... stupid. So I got Vegas trial. Took me a DAY to get anything together. Still not confident I have a grasp on what happened. Vegas is HARD!!! Stupid Sony... like devoloping for the PS2/ 3 ;p. SO I thought I'd give Premeire Elemants a try. It WORKS!! and It's, while not really like PremPro, it's as easy to get into. HELLA easier than Vegas. Elemants does kinda get finiky when it comes to complicated plugins and junk (VERY finiky) so I suggest you go Pro (Premeire Pro) if you can. For my 30 days, this is good for me ;p.
