I posted this in the other thread about the contest results, but in the interest of getting a response, I'll post it here too:

Could somone explain to me Jihaku's popularity and why it won four awards? As far as I could tell, this AMV was just a collection of random anime clips accompanied by a live action mouth singing a song. If the editor was trying to be coherent with his choice of clips in relation to the lyrics, I sure couldn't tell. Could someone enlighten me? :?

its more of a conceptual video than it is straight lyric sync and story telling... or atleast thats why I like it...

plus the creator seems to have twisted the phrase "the best of you" to its literal meaning rather than its connotation/sarsastic meaning (well atleast i think so)

it uses ALOT of anime that ALOT of people like, its very well timed and was entered into conventions (as far as i know), so it got seen by LOTS of people...

its a grammy nominated song (i donno if it won but its on my grammy CD) and yea...

its emotional, and has just enough mix of the live action with the anime to not look too off... the masking and cut outs were really neat, also the rotoscoping and any other effects... they were made to be blended more with the visual than stood out like lines or random shapes... the lensflares werent ovbious like some videos and blended with the video as well...

I liked it, its different from most AMVs in that its not just lyric sync... and he did have some lyric sync, it just depends on how you look at it... but in truth he had the mood sync that the song needed...

plus I wanna steal the song for a vid of my own (well since I have it on CD no need for stealing XD)

There's an intangible quality to that video that makes me really like it, and I can't quite place my finger on the reason why. Sure it's got good pacing and mood synching and nice (subtle) visual effects, but so do many other videos. Jihaku is confused and imperfect. There are scenes that fit amazingly well and scenes that don't fit at all. But for some reason I feel that this imperfection works, that it makes the video passionate in a very human way. I guess it just seems like I'm rambling on pretentiously, but really, that's what I personally get from Jihaku...

Anyway, congrats to the winners. Many of my favorites from this year didn't even make it to the finals, but that's only to be expected. :P (Well except for Zetsumo's mysterious no-show. Come on, where were the Naruto fans for once?)

Odd how Pwolf can rework an old AMV, and yet cant even seem to find the time to submit a video to a local con's contest, when the person who submissions go to lives maybe 15 blocks away. I smell conspiracy :)

another year of "Whos more popular, what songs are more popular, and what anime do you like"... great videos are kept down because their not "popular" enough... bah, sucks!

Well, now that all that is over, I can start on my goal of making a clean sweep of next year's VCAs.

I figure it will take about 5 videos to cover all the categories if they stay the same. Best First Video and Rookie of the Year is gonna be a given. As long as I can win Best Dance, Best Comedy, Best Horror, Best Romantic, and Best Trailer, each one will be able to cover the other categories.

Dance = Action, Effects, Fun, Artistic
Comedy = Action, Fun, Lip-Synch
Horror = Character Profile, Dramatic, Instrumental, Artistic
Romantic = Dramatic, No Effects, Sentimental
Trailer = Lip-Synch, Parody, possibly Action or Comedy/Fun

As for Best MEP, I guess if I contribute to every MEP that comes out this year, I can be sure of a lock.

Most Helpful, well, I better start responding to every "help me" post here and leaving good OPs to many people's videos. 8-)

Most Original shouldn't be too hard to get if I can block out everyone else's vids from being in the spotlight.

Most Improved is the only possible one that may elude me.

With a sweep, I can be assured of Creator of the Year and Video of the Year. I can see it now.... MWAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA!!!!!!!
