I don't think AE geniuses are the problem. The problem is aspiring AE geniuses.
For example: Shatter is practically a program in and of itself due it's many options and uses. However it comes with a preset (this is a word all effects videos should fear) that can be applied in a single click which will. . . well, do what all the other videos do. Now do do something fancy and uniqe (such as a "dust in the wind" type effect) can take hours of tweaking physics, adjusting primary and secondary impacts and creating coustom shatter maps.
One click, zero knowlege VS hours of learning and experimentation, plus some reaserch.
The problem (one of them at least) is that gaudy effects are too easy.
Also people are rewarded throgh feedback for the impresiveness of their effects, not their imaginativness. Hence endless repeats of piano keys and such.

Amen to that, if I see an effect that I can't replicate, I bow before the 1337 editing skills.. [note, I can replicate nearly everything an AE user can do, save for shatter but that's another story... Koop said it best: "It's not the program, it's the editor]pen-pen2002 wrote:I don't think AE geniuses are the problem. The problem is aspiring AE geniuses.

I've never heard of that video from KoopNMEisMIA wrote:Yeah, and Koop made fucking gayphoria. I don't blame programs, I blame the idea that videos are expected to have 40 different layers with radial blurs everywhere in order to be considered good.
Exagerations, video-name calling.....Someone sounds a little jelous.....or maybe it's just me?

There is a such thing as too many effects, but I thought Euphoria was done very beautifully. I have yet to see a video use an editing style like Euphoria with a different song and look nice. Theirs look like shit imo.
I think he choose just the right song for the type of effects he did. Some people say story and soul are what AMV's are supposed to be about but it, to me, is really about how much the vid will affect the person inside. I've seen many videos with absolutely 0 effects AND no story win my heart over to the point of watching 20 times a day and I've seen some videos After Effected to oblivion with words matching the scenes perfectly that bothered my head into never watching again. It just depends on the feeling it gives the watcher inside.
Seeing a bunch of effects and basing the video off that is just plain stupid. "This vid had alot of effects and no story so it's ass". That's what alot of people seem to be saying here.

One more thing to say.
Sail On
Upon viewing the first time, it looked like it barely had any effects. After multiple viewings, I they were all over half of the vid. A video that can do effects without me noticing upon first view can really win me over.
I have a random video with no effects that I love to watch over and over. These types of videos are my personally favs. Watch if you want.
